Madison Bumgarner to Brewers Blockbuster Would Create Cubs’ Worst 2019 Nightmare

The Milwaukee Brewers aren’t out to knock the Chicago Cubs from the National League Central throne. They already did that in 2018. Their goal for 2019 is to keep the status quo.

This explains their interest in Madison Bumgarner. According to Jon Morosi of MLB.com, the San Francisco Giants have had “substantive communication” about the ace left-hander with the Brewers, who represent his “most likely destination” in a trade.

It’s not guaranteed that the Giants will indeed move Bumgarner. There thus far hasn’t been any indication that they hired general manager Farhan Zaidi away from the Los Angeles Dodgers just so he could carry out a rebuild. They seem to be more in a retooling mode.

Isn’t the Cubs’ worst nightmare for 2019 a year where Jason Heyward hits like he did in 2016, fields like he did last year, and still leads the team in WAR?

If:
- Heyward's defensive decline is real and continuing, and his hitting trends downward after his age-28 "peak"
- Lester remembers that he's 35 and he becomes ineffective or breaks entirely
- Darvish is unable to return as an effective player

...then the Cubs have $244.5 million in useless current and future salary commitments. Start with that. Then it turns out that the 2018 second half offense wasn't just the product of random fluctuation and a poor approach, and sacrificing Chili Davis to Jobu can't change that. In addition, Bryant's shoulder is never going to be right and he's never going to have another 20 homer season. There's a significant age-related decline from Hamels and a season-ending injury to Hendricks or Quintana. And finally Addison Russell provides a nice PR disaster by coming back from his suspension unrepentant, and then doing something vile after hitting .210 for a couple of months.

Nothing in this list seems incredibly unlikely in isolation, and so a semi-realistic Cubs nightmare scenario might be the combination of all of them at once, followed by a panicky firing of Theo/Hoyer (the day after the Cardinals win the World Series) in favor of someone who's spent a lot of time with the Mets and Padres organizations.

EDIT: Also, I can't imagine the Giants trading Bumgarner.

And Eloy Jimenez dukes it out with Gleyber Torres for AL MVP.

Isn't it worse if he does something vile after hitting .350 for a couple of months? IF he sucks, it's less painful to cut his ass.
