Mainichi Daily News: Shinjo’s clown act attracts record crowd to Sapporo Dome

Viva Shinjo!

Popular baseball player Tsuyoshi Shinjo of the Nippon-Ham Fighters appeared on a trapeze and descended from the roof of Sapporo Dome in a pre-game event on Tuesday, attracting a record 43,473 fans….

“I didn’t expect this,” a 12-year-old fan said. “Shinjo did something different.”

what ever happened to those nude photos that Shinjo was supposed to put out? Because, uh... y'know... I have this "friend"... you see... who'd love to get a look at those saucy... er....

Fools. Shinjo's clown act has nothing on Jose Macias's.

I dig the Tsuyoshi Stardust act.

It's amazing. Ichiro! and Shinjo both joined MLB in 2001 as the first position players from Japan, a major milestone. You would think Ichiro! being an actual superstar in Japanese baseball, would get the majority of Japanese press coverage. But no, Shinjo got about half the air time. Instead of his hitting, they talked about his threads and wristbands.

I don't fully understand the reasons for his continuing fame -- but we all need the clowns to make us smile.

I was watching TV in a Japanese store and there was a show on that seemed to be like "Punk'd" except that Shinjo was either the butt or the perpetrator of all the pranks. It was hilaripus. I wasn't sure it was him though. Has he been the star of an episode of some show like that?

It's the same reason the Japanese worship David Beckham, even though he's about the 20th best soccer player in the world.
