Major League Soccer in Portland a go, but Beavers baseball still stymied

Soccer: 4. Baseball: 0.

A deal to renovate PGE Park for Major League Soccer will have at least four “yeas” when it comes up for a vote next week, with all Portland city commissioners except Amanda Fritz saying Wednesday they would support it.

Left unresolved is what will happen to the Portland Beavers Triple-A baseball team, which will play in the ballpark this year but must find a new home after that.

Merritt Paulson, who owns both the Beavers and the Timbers soccer team, told council members that his goal “has been and still is to keep the Beavers in Portland or the Portland area for years to come.”

He said his company has advanced three unsuccessful plans for a new Beavers ballpark—Memorial Coliseum, Lents Park and Beaverton.

“When it comes to the future of the Beavers, I am a willing and eager partner; a willing financial partner, business partner and community partner as well. But to succeed, I also need a willing and eager government partner,” Paulson said.

“Throughout this process, I hope you have learned as much about the business of professional sports as I have learned about City Hall and local politics,” he said.

Does some city want Merritt Paulson? We'll let you have him.

There's something pleasing about the name "Beaverton Beavers", but let's hope that doesn't happen. Beaverton sucks.

Lents Park would be sweet though. That's just 3 miles from my ancestral homeland.

Except for everyone that lives in Lents. They'd have to spend all their urban renewal money on Merritt Paulson's playground instead of on sidewalks, parks, and other community activities.

As near as I can tell, there is zero political will to spend $75 million (or whatever) on a new palace for the Beavers. The city's not going to spend it, and Merritt Paulson's certainly not going to spend it. For roughly half that, they're redoing PGE Park.

The only way to keep the Beavers would have been the addition of temporary bleachers in PGE, which theoretically would have allowed for soccer and baseball (it's been done in other stadiums). But for whatever reason, Paulson was either unable or unwilling to consider that option.

Which is how we got where we are, with Portland -- one of the 25 biggest metropolitan areas in the country -- apparently without professional baseball in 2011.

Given the mindset of the locals and the lousy (baseball) weather in April and May, short-season Class A baseball might be a better fit. But such a franchise would still need a new building.

Lents is a small lunar impact crater on the far side of the Moon.

I suspect the required domed stadium and the travel expenses would make this prohibitive.

My guess is that MLS put the kibosh on that.

They tolerate Kansas City playing in a baseball stadium because it's a temporary situation and they're this close to building their own facility. They put up with sharing RFK with the Nationals because that was also temporary and United's a well-supported club in a vital market. I think they'd be way less excited about permanently playing on a baseball field in Oregon.

I'd bet that what happened is that MLS brass told Paulson he had to boot the Beavers from PGE or the Timbers would be stuck in USL-1 for all eternity. He took a peek at what's going on in Seattle (the Sounders have sold ~31K season tickets for 2010, sold 20K+ last year) and picked MLS.

I don't have any inside information or anything - that just seems like by far the most likely scenario here.

Lents is the Portland equivalent of the Bronx. Baseball could never succeed in such a location.

Heck, Portland had to go the short season route not that long ago, right? Wasn't that the Rockies' initial NWL team? [edit: not in year one, year four.]

My guess is that MLS put the kibosh on that.
That was the wisdom some months back, yeah.

So, what's the best exisiting facility near the city for a team in a lower level league?

So can Rob or someone else from Portland explain the story behind the terrifying mask thing in front of the park?

I'd pick MLS over minor league ball as well.

When it initially opened on my screen it was magnified, yikes is that thing creepy.

It's almost certainly a better investment for Paulson, anyway. It's as low-risk, high-upside an investment as there is in big-time North American sports these days. The NFL, I guess, but it's nearly impossible to buy an NFL team.

I love both MLS and MILB, so it's tough for me to see one cannibalizing the other's market. I'd prefer that they co-exist. I guess when it comes down to it, I'm under no illusions here...Paulson and the city of Portland would do exactly the same thing to the Timbers if an NFL team wanted PGE Park and said they'd only move there if the Timbers were evicted.

The Wizards broke ground last week on the new stadium.

Keizer?

I wouldn't put a ballpark in Lents unless you're really keen on fighting off meth heads on the walk to your car.

It's called a sculpture.

I'm not as bullish on soccer, and I'm definitely not bullish on my tax dollars being spent on stadiums, so I can't say I'm happy with this. Sure, it could work out well, but MLS isn't guaranteed to succeed. They have a big labor dispute coming up, and the whole thing could fall apart. Plus, there's the whole thing where all the good players play in Europe.

Once Seattle got a team, the argument was pretty much over. This city loves their rivalries with Seattle.

To be fair, the Beavers attendance has sucked for a few years now.

Well, that doesn't include me, so - whatever! I'm for it!

I wouldn't put a ballpark in Lents unless you're really keen on fighting off meth heads on the walk to your car.

Clearly the only places one can avoid meth-heads in Portland is inner Southeast, Dunthorpe, or the Pearl District.
