Make no mistake, Mike Scioscia is the Angels’ real GM

A strong-willed GM, with the ability to tell Moreno his emotions are getting the best of him and that Scioscia’s stubbornness needs to chill, is probably just what the Angels need to get on track.

But who is everyone kidding? It’s not going to happen.

Scioscia has an 11-year head start on any new GM and seven years remaining on his contract as the voice of the Angels. As much as Moreno likes to think it’s his team, it’s really Scioscia’s team.

More fallout from the Wells/Napoli trade and Reagins’ departure. Mike Scioscia has been basically bulletproof during his time with the Angels; this off-season has been the first time where his influence on the organization has drawn wide-spread criticism.

well, with simers dumping on him scioscia's popularity will rebound.

I think "manager overriding GM" or "GM catering to manager" is also a factor in the Twins decline -- after years of conservative trading with Terry Ryan, Bill Smith has aggressively traded several players/prospects rumored to be in Gardenhire's doghouse, and kept the roster stocked with his style of "scrappy" (or just "crappy") players. Although Smith has made plenty of bad moves on his own too.

As much as I think manager continuity is good, I think I'd rather have GM continuity. Or at the very least, don't promote an "organizational man" to be your GM unless you're confident he can go toe-to-toe with your manager (or meddling owner, in Moreno's case) and challenge him a bit.

Doesn't the owner hire the GM?

Yes, but a good owner will usually hire someone who is in an independent voice in the organization. Baseball is the one sport where there is a lot less talk about the owner/GM relationships, but I look at what Dan Snyder, Donald Sterling and Jerry Jones (appointed himself) have done in the NFL & NBA as exactly the wrong way to hire a GM. Hire a good candidate for GM, back him/her in the organization and get the hell out of the way until they stink up the joint.

The same thing happened to Yankees. Cashman wanted to put several young guys in the pen and see who can stick ever since Stanton-Nelson-Mendoza started to decline, but Torre wanted experienced guys and benched rookies after their first mistake.
