Man killed following argument over Blue Jays pitching staff

Don’t tell me this was over a ‘Down goes Frasor’ comment or something.

Police say a man who died from an “alleged sucker” punch outside a Calgary bar had been in an argument over the Toronto Blue Jays’ pitching staff moments before he was struck.

Brian Ludwig, a 41-year-old father, died in hospital after the fight early Sunday morning following a charity golf tournament. Ludwig had been at the pub as part of the fundraiser.

Police say they were called to the pub at about 2:50 a.m. Sunday morning.

Ludwig was transported to hospital, where he died.

...The fight began over a disagreement about baseball, police told the Calgary paper Tuesday.

“It was in regards to pitchers in the (Toronto) Blue Jays,” said Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus of the homicide unit.

We're all on S01F with the second game most likely going to retreat phase first. I think we have one hold up in that game.

I'm definitely liking the two days between phases setup.

I think two days between phases is the right way to go, with perhaps, no turns run on weekends. Five days is too long.

Concur. But we should be able to move faster. Someone is just not finalizing their orders.

Do we have an email for the guy?

For some reason I thought Fred Lynn was Juneyell but upon looking for France I discovered he is England. Anyway I think France is Brian White and I think Juneyell is Mashimoro. It's one of those two guys.

One of the things i wonder about is whether or not people know they have to hit finalize orders in order for the game to be sped up.
   310. Petunia inquires about ponies Posted: September 06, 2012 at 05:40 PM (#4228673)
We've certainly talked about it enough.

I agree with the consensus so far - either 2 or 3 days for orders, 24 hrs for retreats/builds, no turn processing on weekends, and 'process deadlines when all moves submitted [finalized]' is the ideal setup.

Yo Greg - you and I are the only ones left in the original original game - let's just play it out for the hell of it. Like a refresher course on basic tactical manuevers. With just the two of us and no communicating necessary, we should be able to do at least one entire year of play every day (except this weekend).

I do live in the UK though, so I'm likely turning in within the hour.

On the plus side I'm a grad student, so I really do have nothing better to do with my time than check Diplomacy games during my waking hours.

And I'm recently unemployed so likewise. We'll put these other Diplomacy pikers to shame!

Yeah. Sorry about that RTsquared. Like I mentioned - luck of the draw, pretty much every game one person just gets shut out of any meaningful chance to compete by the end of the first few turns. Hey, at least you're still in the third game!

So I'm the 2011 Adam Dunn of Diplomacy. Hurray for statistical outliers!!!

(And I think there's a difference between reporting what happened (which should be kosher) and discussing stratagems (which shouldn't).)

Oh I totally agree, and we've all been well on the proper side of that line so far. But almost anything more than what's been said here til now would be crossing the line, in my opinion. For example speculation as to why things happened the way they did in that game would be improper. In my opinion.

Well, if he doesn't submit orders for 2 turns, we'll have to look to replace.

Of course, that'll be another week of frustration.

Hell. that's actually two weeks when you factor in build and retreat phases.

Or is the rule two complete years? Meaning not just phases. If so that is even longer, something like a month.

After the the first phase occurred I sent him messages and have yet to hear from him.

France is finalized in Game III.

France is a little concerned about how much less talking occurred in Game III as opposed to Game 1. Usually that means he's being plotted against.

   339. Shooty Is Disappointed With His Midstream Urine Posted: September 07, 2012 at 12:25 PM (#4229351)
I think the wackiness of the Take 2 board is a result of having a mixture of people who know what they're doing and a mixture of those of us who haven't played before or haven't played since Bush Sr. was president.

I'm glad there was no retreat phase.
   351. Petunia inquires about ponies Posted: September 07, 2012 at 04:23 PM (#4229679)
My data point: I started playing Diplomacy about 10 years ago, strictly PBEM, have never laid eyes on an actual, physical board, much less played a FTF game. Haven't played in years. I've probably played around a dozen games, all told.

I said this in our game's public press, but I'll add here: I'm going out of town for the weekend and will have limited access, so I'll be the reason all our phases don't get adjudicated until Sunday night or Monday. I'll be checking in as much as I can, but anything that requires any real communication will be right out. So in all likelihood I won't be able to talk until Sunday night; it looks like our S02 orders phase deadline is around 4am Monday Pacific time so I'll just have to finalize Sunday night as well.

Sorry for the delay. I'll be leaving town again next week but should have much better internet access then.

Greg, this doesn't impact our game as much, since there's no communication necessary, but I may or may not be able to input full sets of orders until Sunday night there as well.

Really cool, isn't it? I've got to say though, the 2-day order phase in the other game "III" is much better.

If our missing player has bailed, we're going to be hurting for a full week more.

If England bailed as well then we probably should give up the ghost since that's going to stretch the delay. England is Fred Lynn so we should be able to get ahold of him and if he wants to bail have him surrender England so we can try and fill it.

If this game is dead I have no problem with joing another game with shorter turns and players that are actually going to stick around.

As I mentioned in another thread, Amazing GF talked me into a fairly-impromptu Wyoming/Montana hiking trip, in part by offering Helena Brewers tickets our first night. I didn't expect it, but in Montana I had NO Internet or cell-phone reception of any kind, and we were far away from any wi-fi cafes or any of that stuff. The message I sent to the board yesterday was from her cell, when we were driving through I think Clearwater Junction, MT. Too late to do anything about the build, but if one of you wants to take advantage of my temporarily-weakened state, well, you'll burn in hell, is all I can say.

I've not been able to keep up with all the interplay about deadlines and what have you, given our... unique naming conventions for games, but if you all have a missing player and a few days to wait, I'd be happy to take over a position to keep the game going rather than re-start AGAIN.

I'm going to be incommunicado most of the day Wednesday as I fly to the east coast, but will have daily internet access once there.

I guess the mechanism for replacing players isn't all that great as they have to NMR a couple turns in a row, which puts them behind. Better to get your guy to surrender if possible although that sounds unlikely.

Anyway I'm saying, don't give up the ghost JUST yet if it's not strictly necessary.

First game just finished F02. For a 7 day game that one is starting to pick up steam but, man, what a bunch of backstabbers.

As for joining a game Austria in #3 should be getting bounced after this turn as that will have been 3 turns in a row without entering in orders. Unfortunately for you most of Austria will have been carved up by then so I can't see it being much fun for you. Though someone jumping in and hitting the surrender button might make the game go faster. I'm not sure how that works on that site. Once Austria gets bounced do we still have to wait 5 full days between turns?

What? Is that bad?

Yes. This is designed to allow you time to go advertise for a replacement player on the forum and so forth.

So once he does get auto-surrendered for multiple NMRs, your game is going to actually get slower if anything. Hence my offer to take it over just to, at the very least, have someone behind the controls who can click 'finalize'.

Is it possible to take over a game before they are auto-surrendered?
   384. Petunia inquires about ponies Posted: September 11, 2012 at 05:58 PM (#4233034)
I don't believe so. Unless he actually logs in and surrenders himself. In which case, again, the game plays out each and every deadline until a replacement is found or the position runs out of SC's.

I think you'll find the first game is in Spring 1908. It stands as a prophetic vision of what awaits those in BTF Diplomacy Take 2.

Can't disagree with you there, Greg.

Holy CRAP, game III is incredible!

I'm still a novice so what's so crazy about that game?

Can't comment specifically, so just compare with our game so far... you see a dramatic difference. I'd venture to argue that MOST of what's happening in our game is a little more typical than what they're working on in Game III.

what they're working on in Game III.

I'm guessing we're a fair bit stabbier than avg. :-)

Yes, once the game finishes it would be pretty cool to have some after action reports here on BTF.

I'd be interested to know other people's strategies and ideas as well as any outside observer's opinion on the game.

It's hard for me to view an opening year steal of London as typical of Diplomacy.
   392. Gaelan Posted: September 11, 2012 at 10:49 PM (#4233269)
I think this will be two turns without a move for Austria. So another full season before he gets bounced.

I believe this will be it. F01, Build, S02 makes 3 turns without orders being inputted so when S02 ends it should kick him out and at that point we'll need someone to finalize orders until his centers are all taken which I doubt will happen until Y03.

Unless it's considered poor form, I intend to, and look forward to the other accounts as well.

So GregK was the guy who kind of got this whole thing rolling and he might very well be the first player to get crushed in the two games. That's how the cookie crumbles sometimes.

Game III is going to end up being pretty interesting. And there's some fun stabbing going on in Take 2.

As for GregK, he's hardly dead yet but stabbing Russia as Turkey is not working out well.
   397. Gaelan Posted: September 12, 2012 at 12:11 AM (#4233337)
I read in the forums about a guy who compiled all of the communications from a game he set up and then published it as a PDF. So there was a written record not only of what happened but of the machinations behind the game. Now that's pretty cool.

Are we sure builds count as turns?

Is Greg in Game III?

I'm not 100% sure but the way I read the rules it appears that not inputting any orders in turns where you need to input orders (retreats, builds, spring, fall) counts as a NMR.

And no Greg is not in Game III.

Shh, no discussing active games! I was hoping Russia hadn't noticed.
