How is this any more OT than soccer, politics, football and basketball?
I don't think he's in the games, you'll have to call in Sam H.
How do you know?
He was probably put off by your brusque comminiques.
Whooooosh!

Who are you in the game, Scott?
Yeah, you could see that coming a mile away.
France
III just keeps getting better. The chat in that game is verging on vicious.
Sorry, yes, #3. It's just a wee bit confusing.
I wish I was in that game. I'm find the Italy--France trash talking amusing for reasons that should be obvious.
I'm about to win one of the other games I'm in (well draw but only because I find killing loyal puppies difficult). Is there interest in starting up another game. The BTF game I'm in is sloooowwwwwww. The games with "strangers" I played didn't have a lot of interaction. So I'm hoping if I set up a BTF game with faster settings (say 2 days, no weekends) it will be both conversational and quicker.
I got lucky. My public game has been a thrill, and I've made a couple of good friends and what appears to be a lifelong enemy. Very interesting game.
2 days/24/24 no weekends is perfect, I think. I'd love to draw France or Russia.
Well, Russia is the most likely nation to win the game so I don't think there are too many people that wouldn't mind drawing Russia.
I would just like to draw a nation that isn't one of the two most likely to not win the game once in awhile. I don't think that is too much to ask.
The other game I was Turkey and Russia was the only person that talked to me. So we set up a little deal and then Austria and Italy disappeared. So we rolled over them while England and France stabbed Germany in the back. Russia was piling up centers so fast that when he he was set up from Tyrolia to Berlin with only one unit in behind I had no choice to set up a little stab on a turn when I was about to get three builds. He would have gotten a solo without having to betray me. It was a neat little play but it probably won't work because it looks like France is going to side with Russia against me. If so I'll have to try and force a three way draw. Russia was pretty disappointed with me.
Besides the lack of conversation, what I don't like about these games is this the forging of permanent alliances. Things get set in stone in the beginning and then they play out to their inevitable result. I think I'd prefer a more free flowing game where anything can happen. The competition was so weak, or in some instances, non existent that it wasn't very dynamic. For instance this last turn was the first time in either game I had to support a hold.
I did not know that. Is that true?
I believe that I have never played Russia. So far this time I have drawn Austria, Germany, and if I take over juneyell's position, Austria again.
Gaelan, I'm going to check out your games. I spend enough time refreshing pages on playdip.com that I might as well expand my list of watched games.

From perusing their forums, it appears that the only way to play in consistently interesting public games is to finish a couple games and then apply to join their 'Classicist' group.
Again I've been lucky that my public game experience has been rewarding. Nobody has NMR'd that wasn't already playing a blown position, and I've managed to drum up plenty of conversation from the other four powers.
Game 48107: I'm Turkey. Austria and Italy both NMR'd early so Turkey and Russia just rolled right over them. I'm pretty proud of the stab I arranged to screw Russia. He would have marched to an easy victory. However, he's in the process of throwing the game to France in his retreat to defend his home centers. So I'll have the most centers when it all plays out but I might not be strong enough to fight France and Russia working together. I'm still not sure I did the right thing with the stab. If I didn't Russia would have run right over Europe while I was stuck fighting through the Mediterranean. However, now that I did, it looks like I'm still going to lose unless I can pull some tactical maneuvers out of my hat. I tried to get Russia to keep working with me after I attacked him. It sounded like it might have worked but I wouldn't make any concessions and he got pissed. People keep want me to give them centers I've already conquered. I don't see why I should do that to get them to cooperate. That just makes them stronger and hence they need my help less.
So long story short, France is going to win even though he didn't do much in the whole game other than stab Germany in the back, which let Russia conquer half the board.
Still the games were fun. I just want a little more competition and conversation. I think I'm going to try a soloist game. They seem a little dogmatic but it might be interesting to see how free wheeling those games are.
I'd be happy to join a 2d one. Playing three at once won't ever work for me, but I don't see why 2 won't. Even if Gaelan's in more games now than I've ever even completed.
In the 70's and in the early 80's the few books written on Diplomacy all state that the stats of recorded games put Russia as winning about 15% of the time and Italy at the bottom and winning 7% of the time or so. Regardless of the exact % Russia is the leader and no one is really close and Italy is in last and no one else is close.
Since the internet has come along I've found a few sites that list France and Russia as being the two most likely to win and Italy still at the bottom.
I'd join a third.
World in Flames has been on my "to buy" list for about a year and a half now. One day I'll actually get around to buying it, and maybe I'll eventually find somebody crazy enough to try it out with me.
I don't care at all for Risk, nor do I like Monopoly. My family really enjoys Settlers, which is fun now and then.
EDIT: By the way, Toasting in Epic Bread. Even if I didn't participate.
I'm Austria in our mutual game. You need to seek out Russia and ask that...
Russia will be gone after tonight's move, thankfully. That should speed the game up.
Any of you guys willing to help me out and join this game just to submit holds (and finalize orders) for 2 turns until you're eliminated? I would greatly appreciate it.
The game is 47835 Diplomacy Rocks.
I would, for that purpose, but I don't see the option.
Anyone willing to create what would be Game IV, I guess? If not, I can tonight.
Looks like you are full up.
I'll join a 3rd game as well, seeing as I'm likely to get bounced out of III pretty soon.
You and me both.
Please only join if you intend to play or at least have the courtesy to hit the surrender button before walking away.
McCoy, will you email me the password for IV as well? Thanks.
Shouldn't you have named it 'Game C' or something along those lines, though?
that would have been too clever by half.
email was sent.
Also while it doesn't really matter, for future games I think DIAS (draws include all survivors) is a superior setting for games. I believe it will force people to play for the solo victory.
Also a pledge to fight to the bitter end is important. I so pledge.
RT, apparently I have to wait 5 minutes to send another email.
Mind trying again? Or maybe Langer or Petunia can forward?
I'll send again but it is going to be like 10 minutes or so.
I'll send again but it is going to be like 10 minutes or so.
Take your time, as long as you don't send to 6 others ;-)
Edit: just emailed you. You should be able to reply now w/o waiting.
The reason I like DIAS, is precisely that it forces alliances of two to play against each other in the end-game because if the small powers are going to be eliminated then one of them is going to get to 18 centers to win the game. So it does prolong the game but in a way that is in the spirit of the game. It forces people to play for the win sooner or later, which in turn creates more opportunity for betrayal, which in turn gives the smaller powers more reason to stick it out.
If for whatever reason you did not get one an email address that I can be reached at is bobonewsom@yahoo.com
Gaelan,
don't disagree with your thinking. Just trying something new out.

Which is cool because I'm not in the other game with any of the 3 of you.
Saving a spot for Gaelan...
I'll try to email RTSquared

Shooty is a good option if we need somebody. He's not a flake.
If you sent me an email just now asking to play add a post to this thread so I know who you are.
If not then Scott gets the nod.
I would like to play in a game that moves more than once a week.

ARe the initials GR to your email?
Arjun, you might be better off emailing Bobonewsom@yahoo.com
EDIT: joined! Hail Freedonia!
Good luck and may all of us get a nation we haven't played recently.
Does that mean a retreat or build phase that falls on a w/e now takes 3 days?
If I had to guess I would say that if we all finalize our orders that the phase will still get processed on the weekend like normal.
Oh OK, that would be much better. I'd just hate to sit for 3 days to see one army retreat.
At least that's my understanding.
Once it starts, IV can be found at http://www.playdiplomacy.com/game_play.php?game_id=48769
I really hope we wait since starting game #4 was my idea ...
The idea behind not processing orders on weekends was to avoid a repeat of what happened in our other game when someone was offered a last minute weekend trip to the mountains etc. where cell phone coverage was absent. As a result they missed out the build phase and it's completely changed the dynamic of the game. But yes, finalize quickly, especially with builds and retreats which shouldn't require consultation.
Matter of fact, I don't believe he can stop your solo. CON-BUL, Pie-Tyr, Ion-Adr. You should be able to peel off TRI or BUL before he gets his forces in place, since he has no builds this turn, and even if somehow that goes wrong you have enough fleets up north to take one more center off Russia before they can stop you.
The real question is how you convinced England and Russia to reject all the proposed 2-way draws for you and Austria!
Game 48107: I don't think the situation is nearly as bad as you described. Russia's going to lose an assload of units and you're in better position to clean him up than E/F. Doesn't seem like they'll get more than 1 build each and they're way far from the action.
EDIT: You posted while I was writing. I don't think you should draw that game. You have the solo in the bag.
