Thats who I want managing my team. A psychotic loon.

A lot of yinzer fans here have been commenting favorably on Robinson, because it's supposedly a terrible thing that John Russell doesn't act like a petulant jackass.

What is it with these umpires?
   4. Hang down your head, Tom Foley Posted: August 31, 2010 at 12:12 AM (#3630342)
You're not going to win an argument with the umpire, so he should have walked to home plate with a bunch of groundskeepers' tools and dug up the plate without even acknowledging the umpire.

What is this, lo-A ball? Its practically a HS baseball coach. Can you imagine acting this way? Jeesus, Mr. Robinson has been watching too much TV. At least you can say he's got big league ambitions.
   6. Lars6788 Posted: August 31, 2010 at 02:11 AM (#3630446)
I could just imagine the it storm this incident would cause if a player like Hanley Ramirez, Delmon Young, B.J. Upton had pulled this stunt.
   7. Jolly Old St. Neck Wound, Moral Idiot Posted: August 31, 2010 at 03:08 AM (#3630476)
I guess he must be a T.O. fan.
   8. StillFlash Posted: August 31, 2010 at 07:55 AM (#3630534)
According to the Pirates broadcasters on Saturday night's game, Robinson had spent 10 years as a minor league umpire evaluator for MLB.

It appears the font on the Spikes' uniforms was designed by Barney Rubble.
   10. Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Griffin (Vlad) Posted: August 31, 2010 at 12:17 PM (#3630562)
Those are alternate unis, Dan. Referencing a past team from the area, I think.

Someone needs to grow the hell up.
   12. jcnyc Posted: August 31, 2010 at 12:50 PM (#3630578)
If I owned that team, I'd fire him.
   13. Sam M. Posted: August 31, 2010 at 01:15 PM (#3630591)
Um, all of you who are calling him psychotic, saying he should be fired . . . I guess I just have a completely different take on this: that's entertainment! And I think every single thing Robinson did after he was ejected (and maybe before, too, although that's not as clear to me) was designed to give those fans a show. First the classic "dirt on home plate" to symbolize that the ump obviously can't see it, but then something new and different -- pull up first base and sign it for a fan? Come on -- that's pure gold. You make headlines for the team, get a bunch of hits on You Tube, and if nothing else get a big buzz going in the stands. If he was really even angry at that point -- much less psychotic -- I'm Paula Abdul.

It's minor league baseball. Does the manager have to treat the game like it's the Most Serious Thing Since the Manhattan Projet?

Sam has a point. We've come to the point where any minor league manager who wants 15 minutes of fame should behave like a jackass. This guy will be on Good Morning America for sure.
   15. Fly, the most judgment-free human being on Earth Posted: August 31, 2010 at 02:08 PM (#3630642)
Not only does Sam have a good point, it was OBVIOUSLY premeditated. The announcer knew what was going to happen before it happened.

It was a good show. Good for the Spikes. That's how you market.
   16. kthejoker Posted: August 31, 2010 at 02:11 PM (#3630648)
We've just now come to this point? Ty Cobb was fighting spectators 100 years ago. Tomfoolery at the ballpark is nothing new.

But are shenanigans new?

I have no doubt it was, to an extent, premeditated. I don't happen to think that's a selling point.

If you guys are entertained by a grown man making a jackass out of himself, more power to you. I can't remember the last time I found these little displays of manufactured outrage anything but tiresome, and whenever I start wondering why umpires seem to have a chip on their collective shoulder, I'm reminded that dealing with these general dipshits on a daily basis would likely make me a little trigger happy as well.

The Beastie Boys song in the background is a nice touch.

Is it entertainment if the ump throws out the manager for no reason? (Not the case here obv.) What if the ump made a huge deal about it?
   21. Crispix Attacks Posted: August 31, 2010 at 02:34 PM (#3630683)
This guy is great. Better than pushing and shoving. Here the base recipient gets it signed by Spikes future HOFer Brooks Pounders, the most plural player in baseball history.

Umpire Roberto Ortiz. I can't think of a Latin American MLB umpire other than Angel Hernandez.

1. Why is he wearing a helmet?

2. I'm pretty much over both umpires and managers who put on this kind of performance simply for the sake of the attention it gets them. Sweet Lou may have kicked his hat around, Earl Weaver may have been an artist of the swear word, but this kind of stuff is just stupid.
   24. Tim Stauffer, Trot Nixon's Coming (Dan Lee) Posted: August 31, 2010 at 02:40 PM (#3630695)
Why is he wearing a helmet?

I assume he was coaching a base. Post-Coolbaugh, base coaches are required to wear helmets.

1. Why is he wearing a helmet?

He probably coaches first or third when his team is batting. Coaching staff is limited in the minors.

I'll take a Diet Coke, rLr. Gotta watch that calorie intake.

If I were going to have a managerial freakout, I think I'd take off my helmet first.

If I were going to have a managerial freakout, I think I'd take off my helmet first.

I'd take it off and spin it on the plate, before breaking into the main course of my antics.

Also Rich Garcia, though he's a former ump rather than a current one.
