Manfred On Ball, DH, Free Agency, Expansion, Rays - MLB Trade Rumors

OK, it’s handmade so every ball won’t be exactly the same. I’m not sure how you a whole season batch of balls would be much different than another year.

And why are the balls still handmade? I would think they could make ball making an automated process where they can control their product’s consistency better.

Of course, the Commissioner could just be full of crap.

At the same time, Manfred did admit Monday the ball has changed. He told ESPN’s Golic and Wingo (via Passan): “”Our scientists that have been now studying the baseball more regularly have told us that this year the baseball has a little less drag. It doesn’t need to change very much in order to produce meaningful change in terms of the way the game is played on the field. We are trying to understand exactly why that happened and build out a manufacturing process that gives us a little more control over what’s going on. But you have to remember that our baseball is a handmade product and there’s gonna be variation year to year.”

Handmade? Well, they should have gotten the Cubans to do it instead of the Dominicans. Everyone knows the Dominicans would wrap them too tightly.

Manfred continues to insist the ball isn't juiced, fine, but has anyone asked him if they would consider deadening the ball to provide a bit more balance?

I think everyone already knows the answer to that question.

He may have answered already: "... there’s gonna be variation year to year.”

I enjoyed Verlander's audible smirk during his dugout interview last night when Robothal told him the Office of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball™ says the balls are the same as ever.

The question now is not *whether* the balls are different, it's *why* they are different. Manfred insists that it's just random variation, but did admit in the interview that I heard on XM yesterday that they are made from smoother leather and tighter stitching this year.

I like his claim that he has "top men working on it right now". Top. Men. Not to worry!

Did they get stronger women (I think it is still women) to stitch the balls? Why would the stitching be tighter?

Yeah, but I think a problem of this magnitude can only be solved by the bluest of blue-ribbon commissions.
