Manny Machado: Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner wants ‘essential’ chat

He is Manny Machado, one of the greatest young players to hit the free agent market.

And this time, after all the years of trying to get below the luxury tax, the Yankees have no financial restrictions on signing the guy who could be the centerpiece of their infield for the next 10 years.

The $300 million question is whether the Yankees have the same interest in Machado as he has in them.

The Yankees have yet to publicly declare their interest in signing Machado, 26, and say they first want to address the void in their starting rotation. But if they decide they want Machado, they need to talk.

“It’s not just important,’’ Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner said. “It’s essential.’’

They need to have a heart-to-heart chat with Machado about exactly what he meant when he uttered the infamous words that he didn’t want to be “Johnny Hustle,’’ during a Fox postseason interview.

“If it’s a $300 million guy or a $10 million guy,’’ Steinbrenner said at the Major League Baseball owners’ meetings, “clearly those comments are troubling.

“But that’s really [GM Brian Cashman’s] job. If we’re interested in any player, to sit down with them face to face and ask him, ‘Where did this come from? What was the context around the entire interview? Was there a point? How do you justify it?’

“Because that ain’t going to sell where we play baseball.’’

When asked how important it was to determine whether Machado simply misspoke, or actually meant those words, Steinbrenner didn’t blink.

“That conversation will happen,’’ Steinbrenner said.

The context must have been that he didn’t want to be associated with Pete Rose’s gambling habits - can’t really think of other ways out of this

A viable way to spin it:

"I want to be in the line-up for 162 games a year; I want to be playing whenever there is a meaningful AB. That means that sometimes I do not sprint to 1B when I am clearly out, or go at 100% when I hit a lazy ball to LF, knowing that that catch is made by major leaguers, 99.5% of the time. I do not run into walls chasing foul balls. Many may see that as lack of hustle; I see it as playing the percentages, so I am fresh and ready to play meaningful games and take meaningful at-bats."

The problem isn't so much those things as it's the loafing on fly balls that he thinks are home runs but wind up being not home runs. Machado's not the only player with this terrible habit, not by a long shot, but it's something that should be addressed in no uncertain terms before he signs any contract.

Of course the even bigger issue is whether he'll agree to go back to 3rd base, where his value is far higher than it will ever be at shortstop.

I agree with the concept of fake hustle for the sake of fake hustle being wasted energy.

His on field douchery is another matter.

OK, but that's not true when it hurts your team on the field.

"Fake hustle" that involves running out a routine ground ball, or running hard on a maybe-HR, turns into real hustle when the IF bobbles the ball, or the ball hits the fence.

I'm not a baseball traditionalist but I agree with most of these criticisms of Machado. Doesn't mean I wouldn't want him on my team, but it probably will and should cost him some $ in free agency.

I did find it hilarious when he blew a bubble running down the 1B line during the World Series.

Also, that extra hustle would make it hard to blow a bubble while running down the first base line while trying to beat out a throw.

We've come a long way since Casey Stengel blew his top at Mickey Mantle after he saw a photo of the Mick with his hands on his hips, while blowing a bubble in the outfield.

Mantle was 21 at the time, and as long as Casey was his manager, he never popped another bubble in a game.
