Manny Ramirez in talks with pro team in Taiwan

Can he handle the Taiwanese media?

Manny Ramirez has had discussions with the EDA Rhinos in the Chinese Professional Baseball League in Taiwan, reports FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi on Twitter.

Ramirez, 40, had hopes of making a return to the major leagues and has been playing in the Dominican Winter League. Ramirez last played in the MLB in April 2011; he was released by the A’s last June after hitting .302/.348/.349 with no homers in 17 games with Triple-A Sacramento. Over his 19-year career in the majors, Ramirez hit .312/.411/.585 with 555 homers.

The EDA Rhinos are one of four teams in the Chinese Professional Baseball League that plays in Taiwan and has won two Taiwan Series titles.

He'll never be a True Rhino. He seems like more of a Uni-President 7-Eleven Lion.

Is this going to delay him getting kept out of the HOF by writers trying to make a statement?

I recently saw the Lamigo monkeys logo and will pay cash money for anyone who can get a hat from them. Don't we have primates in Taiwan? I will meet you in Singapore or Hong Kong if you are a taiwan primate and buy you a fancy meal if you get me a Lamigo Monkeys hat.

???? Manny ?? Manny.

Edit: Damn. Apparently you can't post Taiwanese characters. It was a translation of "That's just Manny being Manny."

In the past, players who finished their careers overseas were still voted on in the election that came five years after their last major league game. So, it probably won't.

And I don't think keeping Manny out would be the same thing as keeping Bonds or Clemens out.

Ordering children from a website is generally not advisable... unless you're actually ordering that mascot - which I agree, would be cool.

It's also entirely possible that not reading the language has caused me to miss the product entirely.... at least, I hope so.

"Fight together elephant monkey."

Indeed. Truer words were never spoken.

I was in Taiwan this past October/November. A monkeys t-shirt would have been awesome, of course I'm too fat to fit in most Taiwanese sizes.

Somebody needs to have a documentary crew following Manny around. It could be called "Manny being Mandarin".

I'm guessing this could be the roadblock in Manny's negotiations as well.

The EDA Rhinos probably have no idea that when you sign Manny, your hand towel expenses skyrocket. I hope they can fit it in their budget.

Would it be a problem to find a good dreadlock-maintenance salon in Taiwan?

I guess we know what happened to Ozzie Guillen. I've never seen him hatless before.

The truth of the final line of "Ball Four" is never more evident to me than when I see a guy like Manny trying to hang on with a team in Taiwan.

You spend a good piece of your life gripping a 64-year-old traveling secretary, and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time.

The EDA group is pretty darn wealthy but generally speaking teams in CPBL lose money often at a significant rate, though I suppose a good enough ad / publicity campaign could help reverse that to an extend, I guess Manny would certainly improve interest by a lot. And the team wouldn't be under a huge amount of pressure performance wise anyway, its hard to suck too badly in a league with 4 teams.

EDA group is most famous for running an amusement park (to the average public at least), though their main business is steel, but they branch out a lot, amusment parks, college, shopping malls, buses... you name it.

An update, EDA head coach tells media that there's a 90% chance that Manny is going to be signed... well that certainly gives me an incentive to buy tickets I guess...
