In what world does this make any sense whatsoever?
That was beyond infuriating. I turned the game off after the base hit to make it 5-2. How do you hit 2 batters and walk in 2 runs? Don't get me wrong. The Phillies have some guys in the lineup who can hit the ball a long way. But come on. At least get the ball close to the strike zone.
Looking at what happened after I turned the game off, that's what looks like they started doing. Granted, giving up hit after hit is frustrating. But I'd much rather see that than hitting batters to load the bases and walking in runs. That's just inexcusable.
But, that's the Cardinals 2011 bullpen for you. It's like 2003 all over again.
Yeah...I could've laughed it off if he'd taken the piss in his follow-up, but he kinda doubled-down on it, didn't he? Aw heck...I'm laughing it off, anyway.
Interestingly enough, just one night earlier, Ernesto Frieri walked two guys then HBP'd in two runs in his five-batter stint.
My thoughts as well. He attempted what was clearly a joke. It didn't work. That doesn't mean his worldview is skewed.
A world where might makes right.
Alfredo Aceves walked five consecutive batters in the second inning last night.
My issue isn't with what he said, it's just that I'm sick and tired of having "U-S-A U-S-A Go Military!" shoved down my throat at every sporting event I attend.
You can have the opinion that what he said was inappropriate, but he's absolutely right he can say whatever he wants. 1. Free speech and all that. 2. I sure don't see anybody volunteering to try and shut him up.
Me too. Long live the Empire!
That's just liberals over-compensating their effort to prove that they support the troops.
Did Dan Shaughnessy start this with Red Sox Nation? Or did it start before that?
"Raider Nation" has been a thing for a long time.
That's the least scary phrase I've heard, ever.
Everybody borrowed it from Aryan Nation.
Yes, I think it is a stupid concept.
For those in denial, "Yankee Nation" dates back to 1776. Often imitated, never duplicated.
Its treason!
I think you misspelled Rider they did celebrate their centennial anniversary after all. (OK, so that might be fudging things a bit)
I believe Oriole Nation ranks somewhere The Maldives and Vanuatu.
I think it would actually be pretty hard to hit an individual with a tank cannon. I mean, unless Halladay doesn't notice that they rolled a tank onto the field, and is just standing on the mound.
Now use the .50 cal, and Roy's toast.
Close only counts in horseshoes and artillery shells.
Yeah, you're right, they could use an HE round. I was thinking armor piercing where they'd actually have to hit him.
We'll burn down half of Tokyo and call it collateral damage, then.
The Braves don't have a nation. They have country. This Is Braves Country, to be precise. We're totally Articles of Confederation like that.
Exactly. Its funny cause its true - Cardinals fans are homicidal murderers. LOL!

It's amazing how intent they are on justifying their title of "worst fans in baseball".
Test him with a puppy.
Which is me!
R Howard hit by pitch, S Victorino to third, C Utley to second.
Obviously Tony needs another LOOGy.
Oriole faction? Oriole brotherhood? Oriole solidarity movement?
Something more on those lines. A nation they are not. They are the oppressed, dominated by occupying armies of foreigners. If you doubt this, then you need to visit Camden Yards when the Yankees or Red Sox are in town.
A fratulence of Red Sox
An irrelevance of Blue Jays
A murder of Orioles
A contraction of Rays
A DL of Twins
A confederacy of White Sox
An extinction of Tigers
A regicide of Royals
A wampum of Indians
A shrubbery of Rangers
A fall of Angels
A sixth of Mariners
A lack of Athletics
A barrage of Phillies
A hooch of Braves
A pyramid of Mets
A locality of Nationals
A catch of Marlins
A flophouse of Cardinals
A curse of Cubs
A mediocrity of Brewers
A cleat of Reds
A gaggle of Pirates
A challenge of Astros
A pride of Giants
A battery of Dodgers
An avalanche of Rockies
A medusa of Diamondbacks
A scandal of Padres
A laundry of White Sox
A teepee of Indians
A flight of Braves
A shortbus of Marlins
A wellfare of Reds
A coma of Giants*
*too soon?
Ouch.
Correct, but still.
Ouch.
No kidding. That's Tony's dream - five different relievers in one inning!
I love it when his genius shuffling of relievers blows up like that.
A statue of Nationals
A purgatory of Cardinals
I'd move battery to Phillies, and change Dodgers to an assault of Dodgers.
And as a bonus:
An asylum of Phanatics
I was at the two-bases-loaded-walks, two-bases-loaded-HBP game at Fenway...which also included a tribute to a fan who had enlisted that day. I didn't know whether to cheer or not--there's compelling arguments on both sides.
Also, Dave Roberts got a standing O.
Oriole faction? Oriole brotherhood? Oriole solidarity movement?
Oriole People's Front, The People's Front of Orioles, Oriole Popular People's Front.
That wouldn't make much sense since Halladay was in St. Louis.
I guess you could burn down half of East St. Louis. It would probably increase property values.
To be clear, I was joking with my "over-compensating" comment above. Liberals do seem to go out of their way to constantly remind us that they support the troops, but I don't think that's the reason why the military theme permeates sporting events moreso than it permeates other aspects of our culture.
The DFW media sure glommed onto "Ranger Nation" meme last October which sounded especially goofy considering that in April "Ranger Nation" consisted of not much more than a couple of neighborhoods around The Ballpark in Arlington that weren't bulldozed to make way for JerryWorld.
But basically every person involved in public political discourse does this -- I don't see how it's a liberal thing.
The military and sports are two of the most dude-centric aspects of our culture, so it's a natural fit.
My uncle was a colonel in the Airborne and a Braves fan, and he occasionally threatened to strangle Mike Redmond whenever Redmond got one of his 21 career hits off of Tom Glavine. This never caused a scandal.
Well, when you've got guys like this on your side, if the shoe fits, you have to wear it.
Nat Pack is already used by the pep squad. NatPAC would have been a good name because it sounds like a political action committee/lobbying organization.
Get rid of GBA
Stop worshiping the flag as though it is a religious symbol
Stop telling me that the wars we are fighting are to protect the US and that they get some sort of pass
and by golly
Stop this idiotic "X Nation" for sports teams. It is well past it's sell by date.
I tried to make a joke between this and saying Tiger should be lynched in an alley.... came up short.
It is always fun to take the most outlandish example of someone who holds a particular idea, and then use that as a cudgel against everyone who also holds that idea.
It isn't productive. And it is stupid, lazy and beyond sleazy. But it sure is fun.
Because it isn't. Ray's just making sh!t up.
I'm partial to "I support the war, but oppose the troops."
Wow. that bolded one is particularly bad.
That was his second choice after "Try the Brisket, It's Delicious, Village."
The Royal We.
In other news, the Cardinals just released Batista, recalled Lance Lynn.
As to Tony's love of relievers and stuff, you have to realize that the Cardinals pen has Salas and Boggs are the two best relievers, Motte is the third best and followed by any order of your choosing, Miller, Cleto, Tallet, Batista and Franklin(the best whip of that group is Batista 1.568 (or whatever stat you like for a reliever, none of them are good, best fip of those five is Miller 4.32, xFip is Franklins 4.17, ops against Batista .745) The bullpen is basically Salas and sometimes Motte.
The Nation thing just needs to go away, it's unorginal, it's pompous, it's boring.
And, probably not as good as the original suggestion, but perhaps a default of Dodgers.
What does that even mean in context to this article?
Now, I confess to not having seen the segment. And one especially homicidal "warfighter" wearing Redbird colors who threatens, even jokingly, to kill an opposition pitcher is (most likely) guilty mainly of being insensitive, and has no bearing on the mass of fans wearing those colors. But in the current atmosphere where the president claims the right to declare whomsoever he likes a terrorist to be clapped in irons indefinitely without the benefit of trial, it sounds less like a joke and more like the start of a trial balloon.
Or "I support the troops. I just don't understand how our military budget is 660B per year, and they still can't win a war."
Hey, I see a Republican congressman is in the building. :)
Fortunately, there are a whole lot of people doing just this for hours on end.
Posted as a joke I'm sure, but more logically sound than "I support troops engaging activities that will lead to many of their deaths, but I support those troops as well."
Been wondering about this for a few years now, especially after noticing just how obnoxious it is when one lives among the warring factions of Alabama Nation & Auburn Nation (neither of whose citizens realize that they're merely different satellites of Moron Nation). It's not sports, but the earliest repeated reference to the concept that I can remember is "Woodstock Nation."
Can anyone think of an earlier iteration? Andy? (He's sort my go-to guy for such things, after all. As a historian-in-training back during grad school, my specialty was the post-Depression U.S. with an emphasis on the '60s ... but Andy was actually there, in the same sense that if I'd specialized in the Civil War, I'd regard Harvey's as an authority.)
There are tons of more interesting BASEBALL articles being produced on the Internet that never see the light of day here. Good, well-written articles that have nothing to do with politics or political idealogy. The stuff that Jaffe and Treder produce at Hardball Times, articles at SB Nation, articles at YES Network, and yet they are usually ignored. Not to sound like Tom Hanks' character in Big, but I don't get it. I just don't get it.
The last politics thread went 6400+ posts, and was never shut down...
I heartily endorse this statement. It has gotten beyond tiresome, and no one in charge cares in the slightest.
The design stagnation of the site seems worth noting as well. When was the last time anything at all changed?
For the record, I only support the troops if they're making Ray pay for someone else's healthcare.
At gunpoint.
It isn't as if this hasn't been brought up before either. Repoz's political posts specifically have been brought up many times, especially after everyone gets scolded after a thread gets totally off the rails.
That one I really like. It takes into account their history in Brooklyn plus the history of public transit in LA, or lack thereof. And with Mr. Parking Lot owning the team.
Delightful.
I've heard that one doesn't have to read threads that one doesn't want to read.
Like I do, for example, with the soccer thread. This isn't like paying taxes.
You've said some crazy things before, but at long last, sir, have you no sense of decency? Have you no shame?
