Mariners deal minor league INF Hannahan to Red Sox

Stage 1 of Magnum?

The Seattle Mariners traded minor league infielder Jack Hannahan to the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Hannahan… has played in 290 major league games, mostly for Oakland (2007-09)... Over his career, Hannahan has batted .224 with 16 homers and 90 RBI. He was batting .228 with five home runs and 33 RBI in 63 contests for Triple-A Tacoma this year.

About to lose a shocker to Seattle - season over

My condolences on the Red Sox' loss tonight. I do suspect this will be the loss that keeps them out of the playoffs.

I can take responsibility for the mini losing streak because I showed up for the 2nd game at Oakland on Tuesday night. But I'm pretty sure the Sox actually won the game tonight against Seattle in extras, despite the current 25-man being a bit pathetic.

Yeah - they won - I turned it off in disgust

I saw speculation that this move is a precursor to Lowrie being dealt. Which is an interesting thought.

That's really the only way it makes any sense.

I mean, having Jack Hannahan at AAA is a perfectly fine thing - dude's got hisself a glove - so this move in no way guarantees a Lowrie trade. But it doesn't make a lot of sense in the absence of that possibility.

Better, much more boring explanation: Pawtucket 3B Jorge Jimenez has been given leave by the Red Sox to play in the Puerto Rican series. Other Pawtucket 3B Gil Velazquez kind of sucks. They've got another minor league vet, Ray Chang, in Portland. The Red Sox can use AAA depth at third base.

MEN-E-CHI-NO *CLAP CLAP CLAP-CLAP-CLAP*

I might actually be forced to not hate the Red Sox if they put together a middle infield of Scutaro and Menechino.

Marco Scutaro.
Marco Scutaro went and turned into an above average shortstop once he left Oakland. The others, well, those are the sorts of guys you acquire when your regular gets injured and your backup gets injured, too. just like in Oakland, I guess.

Why can't this move just be for minor-league depth? It's not like the Sox are stacked with first/third basemen in Pawtucket.

The only way I see the Sox trading Lowrie is if it's Werth coming back, and even then I'm not sure Theo would do it.

Gotta plead ignorance here, but what exactly makes Lowrie such an appealing trade candidate that he is a 'maybe' in a trade that might net a player like Werth? He's 26 and has been hurt for basically 2 seasons. It does look like he's hitting some in a severely limited sample-size this season. Isn't he a 'bat-first' SS type? I'm not seeing it.

It would have to be on the rep he developed in limited time before his wrist injury, which was as a good hitter and solid defender who had beaten the skeptics and was good enough to stick at SS. I also doubt the Phillies would give up Werth just for Lowrie, which is why I don't think this Hannahan move is anything but organizational filler so Pawtucket can actually field a team. The Sox like Lowrie too much to part with him for anything less than a Werth-type player (and even then I'm not sure), and the teams with Werth-type players would probably be unimpressed by an offer of Lowrie.

this is the part that stretches the imagination. what makes you think they like him that much? they haven't shown that kind of delusional insanity in the past.

Though I never saw more than a rumor to verify it, they did offer Lowrie for Iannetta and were refuted by Colorado, so that one detail would seem to indicate that the team doesn't view him quite as highly (nor do the Rockies for that matter).

Uh, if Jed Lowrie was the best player given up for Jayson Werth, the Red Sox would make that move a thousand times over.

19 posts on Jack Hannahan? Seriously people?

Either that, or they'd be unwilling to move Iannetta for less than a Werth-type player, either.

That's 2what I was thinking. I was sure it had turned into a Mets thread or something.

Hannahan had no fiutre in the Mariners organization and was possibly useful in Boston's, so they made a deal for his sake more than anything else.
