Mariotti: Ozzie, Sox: Chicago’s rude, crude embarrassment

You knew the raving sheep herder had to blow in.

Just as the Sox and Major League Baseball ``addressed’’ matters two summers ago by having Guillen attend sensitivity training, which obviously helped. Reinsdorf and Williams think they’re above these issues, when, in fact, the issues define who they are as executives and human beings. Unfortunately, some media fear Reinsdorf and curry his favor, which might explain why WMVP-AM’s Marc Silverman—who seems thrilled to have Reinsdorf on the station’s ``Lunch With a Legend’’ series—was more eager to criticize his on-air guest, the Sun-Times’ Carol Slezak, than simply interview her about her post-dolls, anti-Sox column.

...He is guilty as sin, actually, for making a mockery of his craft. Can you imagine such a trail of trash ever being littered in Boston, New York? Could you imagine a manager keeping a job through it all, no matter how many championships he won? As long as reporters have work to do, and as long as clubhouses are open to media, a sports franchise has a responsibility to maintain a civil, orderly, professional workplace. I don’t subscribe to any boys-will-be-boys junk when it comes to working environments. If players want to go through ``Slumpbuster’’ rituals with inflatable dolls, do it in the trainer’s room, where the media can’t see it. When you make it public, the organization is judged accordingly.

Yeah! The reporters had no choice but to be outraged! Outrage was thrust upon them! That's the ticket!

It's certainly not an example of the media blowing an innocuous joke out of proportion on a slow news day! No sirree!

Man, it's depressing how boring Jay Mariotti wants the world to become. He is an enemy of humankind. That sounds snarky, but I mean it. Yeah, I'm pulling out my high-caliber Gaelan gun here: Jay Mariotti has no soul and is an enemy to human endeavor and creativity.

I agree whole heartedly that Mariotti is Chicago's rude, crude embarassment.

Jay Mariotti...the Dave Egan of Chicago. (Apologies to Mr. Egan's descendants.)

Well now they are all up set because we Chisox have life size dolls in our club house called Cyndee and Raylee but there is a miss understanding Al. Yes we call Cyndee and Raylee our Slump Busters but there is nothing Impure about it. When you are having trouble getting the old pill across the platter you need to practice practice practice as the man said which way to Canarsie Hall. So in the tunnel in the Cell we set up a regulation home plate and a rubber 60 feet 6 away and we prop up Cyndee or Raylee she bats left and Cyndee right. Yes there is a bat in their Posterior but that is just so they will stand up otherwise you know a doll will fall over it is not Buy Pedal. Now lets say I need my slump busted I stand on the rubber and A.J. Pierogi squats behind Cyndee and I fire it in there till I can throw strikes again and Ozzie Guillen umpires and says Good toss Keefe that one was at her Naval or too fine Keefe that one was at the top of her Rack. It just goes to show you never jump to Conclusions like if you see a needle in someones locker he is not always on the stereos he could be a Dialabetic or just have dwarfism and need Huge Growth Whoremoan.

Absolutely I can. Jeff Nelson springs immediately to mind.

However, defending the White Sox players on this one is really kind of silly. They crossed a line without a doubt. But I think most of the shouting should be reserved for human-on-human violence, not human-on-doll.

Cyndee and Raylee? Wow, Jack, I just assumed that they were Mystique and Aura.

Mariotti's just mad because he "wants some of that stuff".

A quote from Rick Telander's column today (note that Kerry Sayers is female):

"Outfielder Brian Anderson approached [Comcast SportsNet's Kerry] Sayers, whom he knows.
"'Did it offend you?' he asked of the doll thing.
"'I thought it was funny,' the reporter replied."

I seriously thought the headling here was Mariotti: Chicago's rude, crude embarassment. I didn't see the Ozzie part.

Well, what's she going to say? She has to work with these guys all year. Comcast/Chicago is partly owned by the White Sox. Sayers is not exactly an unbiased commentator.

This kind of locker room humor has no place in America's locker rooms.

"The Blizzard" is better at what he does than Mariotti is at what he does.

That's kind of cynical, I think, and not really correct IMO. She could easily tell Brian Anderson that it was out of line if that's what she thought. There's no way she's punished for making that statement in this cultural climate, particularly as nobody would even care if she took that stance because it would be more or less expected.

Heck, even Joe Crede said it wasn't something he would've done, and these are his teammates he's talking about. KW didn't defend it. There's no company line she'd've had to take.

I don't know, Doc. I've never been an easily replaceable pre and post-game spokesbabe on basic cable, but I would imagine courting controversy in the workplace and possibly alienating a segment of my viewers would not be high on my to-do list. Or maybe she really did think it was funny. Either way, pointing out that Kerry Sayers claims she thought it was funny does not help Telander, no matter what point he was trying to make.

I'm pretty much here to slam Kenny! every chance I get, but I think he did no wrong here. And even Ozzie, who's a crackhead, basically is in the right.

Man, Ozzie must have slept with Jay's dog, whilst kicking him - or something.

You sure are, Jay.

The Sox can crow all they want about their World Series title, how they beat the Cubs to the holy grail. At least the Cubs still own their dignity as a Chicago institution

You can't own what you never had.

I cannot think of another company -- another sports team -- that would tolerate this unceasing run of verbal thuggery, especially when he isn't succeeding on the field.

Yeah, it's a real shocker. The Trib should know better.

Better yet, kick the media out of the clubhouse so they can't see it, then let in the bloggers.

Mariotti actually has a point here. If baseball players and managers want to be treated like professionals, they have to act like professionals. When you are in your employer's premises (i.e. the locker room), you should probably avoid bringing in plastic sex dolls. If the Sox don't watch themselves, they will be getting an Isiah lawsuit fairly soon.
