Marlins CEO Derek Jeter: Don Mattingly ‘under contract’ for 2019

MIAMI—Derek Jeter signaled Thursday that Don Mattingly is expected to return next year as manager of the Miami Marlins, providing some dugout continuity for a last-place team in transition.

Mattingly has one season to go on a four-year contract he signed when he joined the Marlins for the 2016 season.

“Is he going to be back in 2019?” Jeter said. “He’s under contract. Yeah.”

So, what do we suppose Mattingly did that is leading to him being punished so?

It will be like The Office where the stripper was done stripping and Dwight made her answer phones fully clothed because she was getting paid. Except Jeter won't insist Mattingly be clothed.

In transition? I think the transition from a 2nd/3rd place team with a couple of stars to a last-place team with garbage players is complete. They are 10 games worse than the Mets. Yeah Jeets!

If there's one thing you can count on in this crazy world, it's that if you've got a contract with the Marlins for the next season, you will be with the Marlins the next season.

I considered referencing Arnold Johnson in the intro, but, having already done something like that recently, I felt it a bit much to repeat myself so soon.

"He knows how to lose," said Executive Vice President Derek "Dreamy Eyes" Jeter, "and this is a young team. It needs some veteran leadership if it's going to lose. We owe it to our fans."

When asked about plans for losing in the future, Dreamy Eyes Jeter was non-committal. "No one can lose all the time. We might win a game here and there - after all we do play in the same division at the Mets - but we feel that Don is uniquely positioned to lead our team directly to the cellar. Whether that involves decimating our pitching staff, having JTReal try to steal home, or what-have-you, I have complete confidence in Don's ability to make the wrong decision."
