Marlins fire Ozzie Guillen

Guillen had three years and $7.5MM remaining on his contract with Miami. Bench coach Joey Cora has also been dismissed, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports

Think that Loria could find a better use for $7.5 mill?

Shocking.

And yet saddening. I was looking forward to another round of Ozzie's "Manic in Miami" tour.

Boston's impatience cost them a chance at Guillen. What a shame.

I hate it when something is so obvious it is no longer as hilarious as it should be.

Much as I dislike the ChiSox, I am still hoping Jhan Martinez turns into a shutdown closer...

Huh, I guess Guillen/Cora are a package deal; Cora has often been discussed as future manager material, so I don't think you'd fire him just for kicks.

It'll be interesting to see whether Guillen and Cora can overcome this semi-disaster and get managerial jobs. I suppose the answers are "probably" and "who knows", respectively.

If you don't count Brandon Hyde's one-game tenure from 2011, Guillen finishes with the worst winning percentage in Marlins history.

Bobby Valentine is available.

Who gets this job, and who gets Toronto? If you had to choose one or the other, which would you take?

Bet there is an obscure clause that allows Loria to pay the balance in Monopoly money.

#8, definitely Toronto. You'd have to be crazy to go to Miami. Therefore, you can expect Valentine to be named the next Marlins manager.

You'd have to imagine that the media is wearing black today out of mourning...

Well, Guillen's sons can now go on a 182 character rant.

Toronto, and it's not particularly close. The Marlins are in absolute disarray from top to bottom at this point.

"Bud, it's Mr. Loria. Put me down for another seven and a half on my check this year, that Mexican guy I hired wasn't working out."

The odds are pretty good they do not hire anyone to replace Guillen as manager, rather they leave managerial decisions to a dolphin in right field that swims to either a "YES" sign or "NO" sign.

Dolphins aren't cheap. Jose Canseco will swim to a YES or NO sign for half of what a dolphin gets.

I love the idea of Loria having to pay Ozzie $7.5 million more to sit on the couch at home. How ironic that he finally spends some money this year and everything falls to merde on him.

I look forward to Jack McKeon's return in the Marlins' dugout.

A-Rod and Michael Pineda for Giancarlo Stanton and Greg Dobbs! Make it happen, Cashman!

With Frank McCourt out, Loria might just be the worst owner in MLB now.

Yeah, but then you need somebody smart enough to do the opposite of whatever Jose Canseco divined...

What did you think he was going to do with the Heath Bell windfall?
   29. bookbook Posted: October 23, 2012 at 08:41 PM (#4281116)
Loria didn't actually need to wait for McCourt to leave to claim that particular honor. Poor Wilpon and Angelos are in serious danger of never winning anything.

I'm stunned Leyland's 1998 season didn't drag him down below Ozzie. Not counting one game tenures, McKeon is the only guy over .500, no surprise, followed by two guys who did much better elsewhere: Fredi Gonzalez (.497 with the Marlins, .565 with Atlanta) and Joe Girardi (.481 with the Marlins, .591 in NY).

According to Forbes estimates (which are net of their revenue sharing estimates), Loria put up $20+ million of his own cash into the club each year from 2003 to 2005.

I met Ozzie a few months ago when he was in town. Didn't talk a lot to him but he seemed like a pretty nice guy to hang out with at a bar and watch a game with.

I wonder if he will get another shot at managing a major league club. I kind of doubt it. But you never know.
