Marlins get rid of orange, cite South Florida cultures with new look

The Miami Marlins have unveiled new colors and a new logo in a rebranding effort under Derek Jeter’s year-old ownership regime, and the old orange is out.

Blue, black, red and gray are the new colors. The logo features a darting marlin above baseball seams and “Miami” in script.

Eh. I do like the cityscape background, but I preferred the old angular font.

Imagine his disappointment when the trademark lawyers said he couldn't use an interlocking N and Y.

This is a pretty slick logo. I'm hoping the keep the orange in their color scheme. Too many teams look the same with the reds, blacks, and blues. Be different, be interesting. People will buy your different and interesting gear IF you don't suck.

Now that they’ve gotten rid of all the major league players (except Realmuto) they turn their eyes to the important thing: the logo.

In another section, fans will be invited to bring musical instruments, bells, whistles and flags as a way to show pride in their native countries.

That could be interesting if they ever get the crowd back.

I've been to Miami 50 or 60 times.

yeah, orange is not a color at all associated with the region. it's not as if there was a bowl game reflecting that for 50 years or that the Dolphins played in such a stadium for a couple of decades.

who thinks of "oranges" when they go to south Florida, after all?

weird.

I actually don't object- but, then again, I'm a Giants fan, and, if the next few years go as many of us think they might, we could use having different colors to prove that we aren't the Marlins.....

I think it's an improvement. Although I wouldn't have taken the Marlins in the "next team to change their logo" pool, since I think they were the last team to change their logo, at least aside from substituting a secondary for their primary.

Who's next? Usual suspect Toronto seems to have entered a new era of logo stability. I guess the Padres look feels generic enough that an overhaul wouldn't be surprising. If the Rays ever get a new stadium, I suppose they'll be due an overhaul. Speaking of which, the Rangers' logo is starting to feel dated to me.

I suspect they'll roll out a new logo, new uniforms, etc, with the opening of the BDC Dome.

While I think they should've kept the kinda terrible sculpture - this, I largely like. Might've spiced up the color scheme a bit (yes, retain some orange; less black) but the logo is good.
The flag/instrument section is a potentially great choice.

But the Nashville Sounds just changed their uniforms to look more like the Rangers!

(actually the Nashville Sounds uniforms look much better than the Rangers)

As much as I like to crap on the Marlins and the Captain, I like the new look. Not sure it was necessary, but I actually like it.

22/andy: Maybe, but it's not an either/or choice. It's not like Michael Hill is like "well, we'd sign Machado but we just spent the player budget on wall paint."

I don't know, I do like the logo but wish the orange was still there. But given a choice, I would be choose this new design if it meant the Marlins kept the home run sculpture.

I thought the Loria logos were hideous when they were first introduced, but they grew on me and now I'm sad to see them go. I'm sure I will get used to the new ones too.

Shouldn’t be an issue unless the Marlins relocate to the panhandle.

You must have no memory of the vuvuzelas at the World Cup a few years back. Although I guess it couldn’t be any worse than the DJ they currently have.

Do they do vuvuzelas in baseball stadiums in the DR, PR, etc? I thought it was more like horns and drums. Vuvuzelas do suck.

gef's banjo section sounds awesome.

I've never changed. I still think the Loria one is terrible. It's boring. Just an "M" with some colors attached. The colors don't go together and there's too many of them. Now, I'm from the midwest, so I get that the logo may have encapsulated Miami better than I'm capable of understanding.

The new logo with the marlin and the baseball is pretty good.
   32. Fernigal McGunnigle Posted: November 17, 2018 at 03:40 PM (#5788840)
The problem with vuvuzelas is that they only make one noise, an ugly noise, and are useless as a rhythm instrument. Almost anything else would work better. Didgeridoos! The key will be to get some sort of loose organization going, so it's not just a riot of random noises. Maybe this would be an opportunity to bring soccer-style supporters groups to MLB, which I think would be a good thing (and also be a throwback to the Royal Rooters and so forth).

Further distancing the team from Marlins Man.

Like a fungus.

The new logo and uniforms are an improvement, but it's an incredibly low bar. Black remaining the primary color was a mistake, particularly the use of a black logo on black caps, which I'm sure go swimmingly with the black-on-black alternate jersey that will be impossible to read from any distance greater than ten feet. And for the love of Christ, why do the home jerseys continue to say "Miami" instead of "Marlins"?
   36. phredbird Posted: November 17, 2018 at 11:39 PM (#5788942)

as a person who worked as a designer, illustrator and art director for 30 plus years, i have to say it's an improvement over the old logo ... but it still sucks. it's a modern logo, for better or worse.

baseball logos should have 19th century design principles embedded in their DNA to feel 'right' ... they're baseball logos, for god's sake. expansion teams are kind of hurt that way, they are captives to some idea that things need to be 'reworked' or 'freshened', whereas teams like the yankees and the cardinals (best logo design EVAH) can stay with the old look because it has become unassailable as the team signifier. the logos were adopted in a time when the logo design was a less urgent component of team identity, and by the time the marketing tinkerers who come up with solutions to nonexistent problems became ascendant there was too much tradition attached to the logos to mess with them.

that said, i do have a certain fondness for certain modernist expansion logos like the old expos one.

as others have said, it will grow on people and then when the marlins change it again, this one will be missed.
