Marlins prospect on Mike Redmond: ‘Who?’ (video)

From the all Redmond look alike file…

One of the Miami Marlins’ highly rated prospects was caught off guard Tuesday by a simple question about his manager.

When Local 10’s Aiyana Cristal asked Jose Fernandez about Mike Redmond, Fernandez replied, “Who?”

“Mike Redmond, Coach Redmond?” repeated Cristal.

“Oh, okay. I don’t know his name, I just met him. I just met him a bit ago,” answered Fernandez.

I never completely confused Mike Redmond and Mark Redman - I knew that Redmond was the semi-regular catcher who hit like .400 off Glavine and that Redman was a left-handed starter - but I usually had to think a little bit before remembering which one was Mike and which one was Mark. The existence of Tike Redman probably complicated things for me.

Huh, I also totally missed that Mike Redmond was managing this team. That's cool, he was active only a couple years ago.

I know who Mike Redmond is (catcher for the Twins), but would never have been able to name the manager of the Marlins.

Mark Redman is also the worst pitcher in Braves history.

They were teammates one year. Don't know if they ever formed a battery though.

I remember Mike Redmond because back in around 2006/2007 when I had Mauer in my AL-only fantasy league I'd plug him in whenever Mauer had a day off and he always seemed to perform inexplicably well. Gardenhire was a proponent of changing as little as possible in the clubhouse so as I recall Redmond frequently hit 3rd in a fairly decent lineup, so his pro-rated counting stats were pretty good as well.

On topic, I swear to you that when I saw this headline I assumed it meant the Marlins had brought Redmond in maybe on an NRI to compete for the backup catcher job. Not that I could name their starting catcher. Maybe it's Mike Redmond?

John Buck ... no ... John Baker? Is he still there? Whoever it is, he's a white guy with a generic name.

That's why I used the past tense. After 2007, Redman's name was seared into my memory.

I remember a reported asked Bobby Cox, after another execrable Redman performance, if Cox saw any improvement from Redman. He said something like, "I saw what I usually see with Redman." That was the most scathing review of one of his players I can remember from Cox.

The reporter really missed his chance to follow up with "How do you feel about Redman's execution?"

Mike Redmond and Mark Redman...this generation's Bruce Bochy and Bruce Bochte.

The Marlins hope you're right, TerpNats.

I was going to joke that some of you had forgotten Kevin Coffman, but... well, I'd forgotten just how bad Redman was (11.63 ERA, 6 games, 5 starts). Blocked it out, I guess.
EDIT: No Brave with as many innings as Redman posted a lower ERA+ with Atlanta. Least WAR is Jo-Jo Reyes (-3.0), followed by Kyle Davies (-2.8). Coffman and Redman were way back at -1.2.

Name the 30 MLB Managers without looking it up.

The recent appointment of several well-known stars makes it easier. This is the first time in many years I've known who manages the Orioles, for example.

Mariners - Eric Wedge was fired, right? I'll still say Eric Wedge
A's - Not Bob Geren. That other guy.
Angels - Mike Scioscia
Rangers - Wash
Astros - Brad Mills?
Indians - Francona
Twins - Gardenhire
Tigers - Leyland
White Sox - Ventura
Royals - I forget
Yankees - Girardi
Blue Jays - John Gibbons
Red Sox - The guy who just left the Blue Jays. All I can think is "John Gibbons".
Orioles - Showalter
Rays - Maddon
Giants - Bochy
Padres - Still Bud Black?
Rockies - some guy
Dbacks - Kirk Gibson
Dodgers - Mattingly
Pirates - Clint Hurdle
Brewers - Ron Roenicke. I know nothing about him but I remember Harveys Wallbangers' amusing comments about his total lack of emotion
Cubs - some guy
Reds - Dusty Baker
Cardinals - Matheny
Phillies - Char-Man
Mets - Terry Collins
Braves - Um.... I think it's a Latino guy
Nationals - Davey Johnson
Marlins - Mike Redmond, apparently

Brewers - Ron Roenicke. I know nothing about him but I remember Harveys Wallbangers' amusing comments about his total lack of emotion

I think he's the only guy who shifts on right-handed batters.

Seattle - Wedge?
Texas - Washington
Oakland - Geren
Houston - No freakin' clue. Baseball chick?
Atlanta - Gonzalez
New York - Collins?
Washington - Johnson
Philadelphia - Manuel
Florida - Redmond (thanks to the thread)
Milwaukee - Damn. Someone I remember playing.
St. Louis - Matheny
Chicago - Sveum? (did he get fired?)
Pittsburgh - Um...I want to say Lloyd Mclendon but that's really wrong I think
Cincinnati - Baker
Arizona - Gibson
Los Angeles - Mattingly
Colorado - Tracy?
San Diego - Black
San Francisco - Bochy

EDIT: Not bad. I was indeed very very wrong about McLendon. Bo Porter in Houston? Wouldn't have ever ever ever gotten that one.
