Marlins release Gibbons during cuts

Nice. Homer yesterday. Gone today.

The Marlins made their first significant roster cuts of the spring Friday morning, with one being a relative surprise.

Along with sending down prospects not deemed ready to be in the Major Leagues at the start of Spring Training, Florida released outfielder Jay Gibbons, whom it signed as a free agent this offseason.

Gibbons, who was trying to make a comeback after not playing in the Major Leagues since 2007, batted .313 with one home run and seven RBIs in six Spring Training games. Because he is a lefty bat with significant Major League experience, many expected the 32-year-old Gibbons to be a favorite for one of the Marlins’ final reserve spots.

Now, he’ll have to find a new scene for his comeback story.

Was never a fan of Jay, and since (I think) Griffen once held him up as an example of JP giving up on players too soon, I always carried a grudge against him.

It wouldn't surprise me if Griffen did hold him up as an example of JP giving up on players too soon, but Gibbons was selected by Baltimore in the Rule 5 draft the year before JP became the GM of the Jays.

I'm just glad that I don't have to hear Orioles announcers say, "Did you know that Jay Gibbons drove in 100 runs once," ever again.
