Saltalamacchia's probably happy. That sort of money in a Marlins deal just SCREAMS "traded to a contender by mid-2014."

Seems like a solid deal, right?

That seems like a fantastic deal. He's from Palm Beach, I wonder if he was Miami or nothing, because I'd be stunned if he couldn't get more money, and obviously the Marlins ####### suck

Marlins unlikely to pay to have all those letters sewn on the back of his jersey. Settle for "Salt" or put them on there yourself.

PS: It's 21 million pesos, not dollars.

In that it's not too much per year for any contending team to take on... Yes.

There is just zero chance he plays out the full contract in Miami. And I could be wrong but doesn't this make him the highest-paid Marlin?

I know Minnesota's chilly in April and September, but, really, is the extra cash worth playing for the Marlins (even if you have a home in FL)? If Minnesota was offering 3/$18 aren't they closer to contending than the Marlins?

Well, at least we now know the QO would have been a wild, crazy overpay for Salty.

Surprised that's all he got. Maybe his 372 BABIP, poor post season and the smears from Olney that there was something in his medical records held him down.

If the Yankees knew Salty was available at that price would they still have splurged on McCann at 10 million AAV more

Yeah... that does seem awfully low.

I mean, the NYS short porch will mask things, but normalized? It wouldn't at all shock me if Salty ended up posting better number than McCann over the course of this deal (and obvi - McCann then has a lot more downside years left on his deal).

over/under on when he gets traded? i'd think winter of 2014 would be a good baseline, since there's probably an equal chance that he gets traded late in the bb season of 2014 or during the season of 2015.

i'd like to think that the only reason he signed with them was he had no other offers remotely close.

Jesus the Sox better really like their C prospects. What an awful two days. Sign Mr. #### Bag Pierzzinknsikisii, Yankees sign Ellsbury, Salty Monkey Face signs for a COMPLETELY AGREEABLE DEAL. WHAT THE ####.

OOhh, wait, hopefully now the Sox can overpay for Beltran only for the St Louis pixie dust to wear off and I can enjoy a $12M RF with no range sitting on the bench all day because he is old and hurt.

Nah, sounds like he's going to KC; does that make you feel a bit better?

As a Red Sox fan, I found Salty easy to root for, but I am not sad to see him leave. I really think the Salty of 2013 is the best you'll ever get, and I think he lacks the command of the strike zone needed to hit anything like .270/.330 in the future.

And for those Sox fans who were upset that the team did not make the $14.1 million qualifying offer to Salty...this contract should act as proof that he would have grabbed it in a second. He'll make less in two years of this contract than he would have in the qualifying deal.

I was definitely one of those people who thought the QO was a no brainer. This contract surprises me.

I'd rather have Salty at 3/21 than Pierzynski at 1/8.75. Yeesh.

Yes. It does.

Is the season starting January this year? So much early movement.
   18. Greg K Posted: December 03, 2013 at 11:59 PM (#4610201)
This is fairly close to the deal the Marlins gave John Buck a few years ago isn't it?
   19. Tripon Posted: December 04, 2013 at 12:54 AM (#4610234)
It should be noted that there's an unofficial salary floor that each team needs to reach, if only to avoid a complaint from the MLBPA. That means somebody needs to make some money.

So, salary split of this deal:
14: $1M
15: $7M
16: $13M
sound about right?

There, that's more like it.
