MASN: Adam Jones: “I just didn’t come through for my team”

Bah…so much for that Adam–God theory.

Adam Jones had a chance to win tonight’s game in the bottom of the ninth inning when the Yankees walked Nick Markakis intentionally with two outs to load the bases for him, but he struck out after chasing a pitch near his head to even the count, 1-1.

He was swinging from the heels, and he knew it was the wrong approach.

“Oh my God, I’m still thinking about that now,” he said. “I’m texting my brother about it. Just over-swinging. I need to stay shorter. Somebody told me, ‘Stop trying to hit the ball to San Diego. Just put the ball in play.’ That’s true. I just need to put the ball in play and make the defense make a play.”

Jones understood the strategy of walking Markakis with right-hander Rafael Soriano on the mound.

“Righty-righty, sets you up. I just didn’t come through for my team,” he said.

“We fought. We put ourselves in the situation. We came back and we just kept fighting, fighting, fighting. They had the big hit and we didn’t have the big hit. We had the opportunity to get it and we didn’t get it.”

The O's radio announcers made it sound like he really did try to hit it 600 feet on that swing. I guess they were right!

He should have bunted. Nunez was playing on the edge of the outfield grass behind third, so a bunt down the line ends the game.

Melvin Mora would have won the game there.

Or Eddie Gaedel

I was sure, SURE that it was going to blow up in the face of one Mr. Joe Girardi....

IIRC, that was what Thorne and Palmer had recommended.

I don't know what you call this, but good writing is not it. He struck out to even the count 1-1?

It's MASN. Everything about it, including its website, sucks.

When I read that, I first thought you were referring to the authors of The Hidden Game of Baseball. Then I realized you meant the O's announcers.

I watched my first Orioles game last night because I couldn't watch the Phillies game because ESPN2 was showing the Phillies game except that in the Philly area we can't watch it in ESPN2 because we have to watch it on the Philly sports channel, and the Philly sports channel wasn't showing the Phillies game because they were showing the hockey game.

Anyway, the Orioles new white uniforms with three-colored caps look pretty cool. I don't remember hearing about these before (or at least how retro they were going to look). I think they made a mistake with the blindingly white front of the cap and bright orange bill, though. Any pitcher who tries to dirty his hat up for ball-doctoring purposes is going to look like a clown. This seems like unilateral disarmament in the race for access to pine tar.

Yeah the real story here is that Joe Girardi got to order yet another IBB. I think he's ticked about finishing second last year in a title that should have been his. He's now up to 6 so far for the season, putting him on pace to shatter the all time record and prove that he is indeed the manageriest manager in the world.

Jair Jurrjens + Martin Prado + one of the "big three" starting pitching prospects (Teheran, Vizcaino, Delgado.)

I guess sometimes things are like they seem. It looked like he was trying to hit the ball into the Inner Harbor.

Crispix,

Yeah, last night was no fun. Hurried home from work to catch the first pitch, to find ESPNSnooz on instead of ESPN2. Since I live in northern Jersey and do not get any of the Philly channels on my cable system, I remain mystified why I was blacked out. But it's really bizarre that no one in the Philly area was able to watch the game either.

Phillies were on PHL 17 last night. (For Crispix at least ... you probably wouldn't have gotten it in north Jersey.) Flyers on Comcast and blacked out on NBC Sports; Sixers on CSN; Phillies blacked out on ESPN2. Odd programming night.

The new Orioles duds certainly work for Mark Reynolds and his awful '70s Fidrychian hair. After seeing his at-bat last night I got a hankerin' for disco.

I don't really live in the Philly area, I live in an area that gets the Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Baltimore sports channels but has its own local news. It's in the Phillies "territory".

So, two cable channels were showing the same hockey playoff game with two different sets of announcers, and both cable channels that were theoretically showing the baseball game were not.

Hah, TLR laughs at your feeble attempts to insinuate Girardi is a more managerific manager than Tony La Russa: THE GREATEST MANAGER IN THE WORLD. EVER.
I really wish I could remember the game I was watching, but the announcers were talking all time manager pitching changes. I don't know if they pulled the numbers out of their asses, but needless to say TLR has a truly impressive stranglehold on that all-important decision.

You're twisting my arm but OK, you can have Alfonso Soriano.

Every managery manager needs a calling card. What's really impressive is how young Girardi is yet is already at the top of his game. It took years for TLR to work up to the 4-pitchers-in-an-inning performance artist that he was. Girardi is only 47 and already performing at an all star level. Just think what he'll be able to do when he's 65 and REALLY set in his ways.
