MASN: Brian Roberts talks about joining the Yankees

After playing 13 seasons with the Orioles, Brian Roberts will be in Yankee pinstripes in 2014. Today, in his first interview since joining the Yankees, he made some comments sure to draw the ire of some O’s fans.

On a YES Network interview, Roberts was asked about the Yankees’ sales pitch to get him.

“As you know, I don’t think they need a whole lot of sales pitch most of the time,” Roberts said. “When you have the opportunity to play for such a storied franchise and an organization that is always going to give you a chance to win a World Series every year, it doesn’t take a whole lot.

“So, you know, as a kid I think so many of us probably dream of putting that uniform on at some point. I had an incredible opportunity to play so many years in one city, it was just time to move on, I think.

“I’ve never played to prove anyone wrong or make a big name for myself. I just want to play the game and have fun. My goal is to play in a World Series. I’ve had a lot of time to never play in a playoff game and that’s what I’m excited for.”

Thanks to Wreck.

Nothing but respect for Brian - followed him as he came up through the O's system not long after I moved to Maryland and made a special effort to catch him when he played in Bowie. A gamer and an underrated 2B for several seasons. However I think he's done as a major league player.

When did he get traded to the Cardinals?

I see nothing in those comments to draw the ire of O's fans.

“When you have the opportunity to play for such a storied franchise

there's an obvious anagram for that word

Re-sod it.

And Red Soit, which I think is the past tense of Red Sox.

Hey, he finished the season with a rush---- and a .945 OPS

in his last 8 games.

Or at least be on the disabled list for said storied franchise.

The big question is whether or not he can stay healthy enough to be flipped to a contender at the trading deadline.

You aren't praying for him to get the Lyman Bostock treatment after signing with the Yankees, how generous of you.

I'm hoping he starts hanging out in a 2005 time machine with Aaron Small and Shawn Chacon.

If anything he said there draws the ire of O's fans, they're just looking to be irate.

I fully expect Roberts to get a standing ovation his first PA back at OPaCY.

I would never wish death on a player, even a Yankee, but given Roberts's history, the question isn't whether he'll get hurt... merely a question of how soon and how long.

If I recall correctly, Brian is one of only 2 or 3 guys to ever have three seasons with 50 or more doubles.
He was a real line drive machine in his prime.
He was a fine 2B-man for many years while the O's stunk; then he gets multiple injuries just as they begin to get decent.
Who said life is fair?

You know, the more you guys bury Roberts, the more likely he goes all Aaron Small on you ;-)

A heck of a player from 2005-2010, but I doubt he'll do much in pinstripes. Shame he didn't get to play in the playoffs for the O's

Is BRob predicting the Yankees have a better chance of making the playoffs than the O's? I'm shocked.

Are the Orioles even trying to make the playoffs?

From their off-season, it's hard to tell.
