MASN: Jones as good as gold

I heard some rumblings earlier today about Orioles center fielder Adam Jones winning a Gold Glove, with the official announcement coming in another week or so. His brother apparently spilled the beans on his MySpace page.

My first thought: People still use MySpace?

My second thought: He ought to know.

I’m told that it’s true, which means Jones will be only the second Orioles outfielder to take home the award. Paul Blair won eight of them.

Somehow, Jeff Stone kept getting snubbed.

Ichiro, Torii Hunter and Grady Sizemore usually have a strangehold on the award, but at least one of them has been kicked to the curb.

Why would the player know before the official announcement?

So they know that they need to be available to the media on the day they get the award.

Could be Ichiro as well. Franklin Gutierrez was sick in CF this year.

You expect managers to understand defensive statistics? (Managers are the ones that vote for Gold Gloves, right? If not, fill in BBWAA members in my response.)

Managers do vote for the GG, and I agree with Shilzzz, it'll probably be Sizemore. The easiest way to win a Gold Glove is to look slick in the field while hitting really well.

Please. As bad as the voting traditionally is, I'm calling that the room for Jones was made by Beltran missing most of the year from one of the Mets' Seven Plagues. He'll be the first wrong-league Gold Glover, but (a) the media won't notice, and (b) it won't be the worst choice in the history of the award.

They will be apologizing to Adam when Rafael Palmeiro-Jones gets announced next week.
