Mason: Candid Tyler Thornburg still trying to figure things out | Local Sports | eagletribune.com

Thoracic outlet syndrome requires a grisly surgery — the missing rib actually has a home on Thornburg’s parents’ mantle — and an arduous recovery.

With 21 months between big league appearances there was bound to be rust.

Yet, as Thornburg works to sharpen his stuff, there’s still little indication of what he’ll have when he wakes up. It’s not until he begins warming that he knows what he’s dealing with.

“It kind of sucks mentally as far as not knowing exactly what you’re going to have out there,” Thornburg said. “But you kind of get a good read in the bullpen. There’s been days where I’ve had to get through basically on a fastball. There’s been days where I’ve actually had a curveball. Then there’s been days when I end up having to get outs on the changeup.
