Matt Holliday’s slde was dirty but don’t expect things to get worse.

Matt Holliday looked a bit shaken after NLCS Game 2. The Cardinals leftfielder spoke softly and let more than a bit of regret slip out about his first-inning take-out slide of Giants second baseman Marco Scutaro.

Honestly, I had no problem with his slide. I equated it to the NBA's so-called "playoff fouls."

So, do they hit him in this series or wait until next year?

if holiday thinks that play was clean, well, then i would have no issue with san francisco retaliating in a way that is equally clean.

this wasn't some ######## unwritten rule type thing -- which i would classify as something like that dustup between arod and dallas borden a while back -- this was a guy coming in at full speed trying to take out the knees of one of your players. that's something that is definitely worthy of retaliation. if i was on the mound the next time holiday came up, i'd put him on his ass 4 times, and then, when he got to first base, i'd shorthop a pickoff attempt so the firstbaseman could put a shoulder into his kidney as he slid back into the base. [/internet tough guy]

somewhat relevant to this, here's a post i made a while back in a similar thread:

seems to me like parra's a bit of an #######. but this:
Of course you can understand why Kuo would be unhappy with Parra’s grandstanding from July

yeah, i do not agree with this. you don't throw at someone because he's an #######. i mean, if we're starting from a standpoint where throwing at batters is accepted, yeah, that's still beyond the line.

if a guy trucks your catcher, i could see putting one in his ribs. if the other team is stealing signs, then yeah, maybe. throw at a guy for a hard slide. throw at a guy because the other team is throwing at yours.

i can understand all of those.

but throwing at a guy because he's a preening #######, albeit a talented one, seems like something that should be stomped out of the game entirely. it's not necessary. if you want to send a message, strike him out, then bring out your own inner preening #######.
