Frankly, I don't think he'll be comfortable in New York.
Maybe they should also think about the effect of showing up their manager and/or seeming like a selfish whiner.
Of course, they might just be assuming (correctly?) that most GMs don't pay attention to such minor details.

As you note, three starts is a pretty small sample size. But more important, he hasn't made a case for endurance. Those three starts have yet to see him complete six innings even once. That inability to go deep into the game on a consistent basis is one of the main reasons that Burnett and Vazquez are also skating on such thin ice. Which is why I think those last two spots are still up for grabs.
I realize that, and I think it's a smart move on Girardi's part. But at the same time, I don't think that Nova's proven much of anything in barely fifteen innings as a Major League starter. What he has done, and done very well, is to keep himself in the conversation.
I actually do wonder if he might pick up something on his fastball out of the pen and be an effective reliever come October.
Vazquez is way out of line here. He is the reason his hook was quick.
And, Girardi set Hughes up to fail today. No Cano, Swisher, or even Berkman or Kearns? Very light lineup despite A-Rod's return.
Swisher and Kearns, I assume, are hurting a little bit (knee and hand, respectively). Berkman sucks against lefties this year. Cano, who knows, but maybe he wanted to give him a day off against a good lefty, since he's been a little out of sorts lately.
But I don't see that that has anything to do with Hughes serving up 0-2 meatballs.
Endurance is basically irrelevant in the postseason with the off-days and a 7 man bullpen to back up 4 starters.
Whoever can give them the best 5 IP should start. That may be Nova.
Offense is down league-wide. Hughes basically has the ERA+ of an average starter and is a good bet for 6 innings every time out. Throw in a good bullpen and a great offense and you're going to pick up lots of wins.
The only Yankees reliever who could have been even arguably a worse choice to bring in at that point against the lefty Overbay in that spot would have been Gaudin.
I don't know how that's any different from me saying that it's good to be a Yankee starter.

Endurance is relatively irrelevant in games 2, 5, or 7, but only if the bullpen hasn't been overworked the previous day. It's not irrelevant in games 1, 3, 4 or 6, none of which have days off following them, at least in the World Series. And since the third starter often falls into place in games 3 and 6, there's a real risk in throwing out a pitcher who can blow out your bullpen just trying to keep your team in the game. You can't always know what the next day may bring.

And well it may be, but that's a pretty damn low standard for a # 3 starter. No matter how good the Yankee bullpen may seem to be at this particular moment, the only long term proven entity in there is # 42. The rest of them are fully capable of reverting into pumpkins just when you need them the most.
