Matthews: What can we expect from A-Rod?

Still, both Long and GM Brian Cashman acknowledge that this version of A-Rod, who will turn 37 in July, is very much an unknown quantity.

“When he’s healthy, he’s always produced,’’ said Cashman, who when pressed for a prediction on Rodriguez’s final 2012 numbers, admitted, “I have no idea.’‘

(Kevin) Long, too, tempered his enthusiasm for A-Rod’s upcoming season with the caveat, “If he’s healthy ... ‘’

As in, if he’s healthy “I think 30-40 home runs is realistic.’‘

Rodriguez, of course, has not hit more than 30 home runs since 2008, when he hit 35. He followed that with two 30-home run seasons before bottoming out at 16 last year. But his run production has remained strong—his 125 ribbies in 2010 was his 13th consecutive 100+ RBI season—although his slugging percentage has plummeted from a high of .645 in his last MVP season (2007) to .461 in 2011.

And according to the projections of Dan Szymborksi of ZiPs Projections, and Bill James, A-Rod won’t make it to 30 this year, either. Szymborski has A-Rod playing just 108 games, with 21 HRs, 82 RBIs and a .264 BA. James is a bit more optimistic: he sees A-Rod finishing .277/29/86 in 134 games.

I don’t care how Wallace Matthews sez it…I get a kick out of him now using Dan’s ZiPs.

A-Rod has what, 3-4 years left on that deal?

And yet, it always projects playing time.

We can expect a cringeworthy romance or two, the commissioning of a singularly narcissistic painting and a couple of rumors showing A-Rod as a very odd duck indeed.

More centaurs? Yesssssss!!! Worth every penny of the contract in entertainment value.

He should have some fun with it. Commission a 30 ft. high bronze statue of himself as a centaur, and have it displayed in public.

Embrace your insanity Alex, enjoy it.

Oh, I'm sure ARod will find some archaic Peruvian muscle treatment, deep in the jungle that will enable him to play 140 games.

All the more reason to not carry a "real" DH and just give Arod 1/3 of the season there.

How many physically exerting plays is a 3B involved in during a game on average? Isn't it possible that being on your feet, shuffling around, being locked in, actually makes one a better batter?

..this argument applies to the 'Good God Youk is made of glass, lets not sign Papi and move Youk to DH lest he become a -1000 OPS+ hitter.' theorm.

Well, I think all the calls for a DH (post-Montero trade) are for a RHB. Unless he was a 3B, he would presumably sit vs. LHP so ARod could DH, with Jones in the OF.

Peter Gammons and Lynn Henning have both talked about ZiPS lately. At some point, Szym figured out how to brainwash old media, possibly in his pursuit to keep Jack Morris out of the Hall.

Are you suggesting that Gardner should be benched for Jones when a LHP is starting? That seems like a bad idea.

Not all the time. But, you're going to give each of Gardner/Granderson/Swisher 10 days off. Plus Teixeira gets 10 days off where Swisher plays 1B.

So, you want to make those off days occur vs. LHP as much as possible, to get your next best bat (Jones vs. LHP) in the lineup.
