Mattingly: Braun shouldn’t be MVP if PED appeal fails.

Throwing that bogus 4.2% bump in HOF voting weight around already, eh Donnie.

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said he hopes that Milwaukee Brewers left fielder Ryan Braun is successful in appealing his positive test for a banned substance, but that it would “make sense” to revote on the MVP award, or strip Braun of the award if it is found that he indeed used a banned substance.

“In the end, I hope the appeal it’s something that was a mistake. I don’t want to see anything bad come out of it for him,” Mattingly said.

When asked if a player who tested positive for a banned substance should be stripped of the MVP award, Mattingly answered, “I don’t know. It makes sense though, a little bit. It’s not 10 years later, it’s a month later.”

...Mattingly said he thinks Kemp should’ve won the award in the first place.

“To me Matt was the best player in the game last year,” Mattingly said. “Ryan had a great year too.

“But you guys (the media) always ask me about unwritten rules, about catchers and stuff like that. Then we have the unwritten rules about voting, because he wasn’t on a winning team. You guys gotta get your unwritten rules together.”

I thought that's what they did. It would make sense if he was Braun's manager and Kemp won. But the way things happened is perfectly consistent with Donnie's perception of the unwritten rules.

I was about to make a joke about written and unwritten constitutions, but I guess even "unwritten" are technically written, just not all in one document.

Regardless, if it's good enough for New Zealand, it should be good enough for the MVP voters!

Donnie B. should be happy that the best player doesn't always win.

Agree 100%. This:

When asked if a player who tested positive for a banned substance should be stripped of the MVP award, Mattingly answered, “I don’t know."

does not equal this:

Mattingly: Braun shouldn’t be MVP if PED appeal fails.

It seems pretty clear to me that this is a subject to which Mattingly had not dedicated a whole lot of thought, and that his expanded answer was designed more to boost his own player rather than to knock Braun down.

At least, that's the way I'm reading it.

If Braun failed the testing because the rumors he was taking herpes medication is true, does Mattingly think he should have the MVP revoked?

Basing your opinion on the appeals process doesn't make sense. The appeals process (in fact, the whole testing process) isn't designed to decide whether you've used PED's or not. If people fail for a masking agent, then there is no proof that they actually used PED's, just that they used the agent. If Braun proves* that his failed test was caused by herpes medication, he still will lose his appeal. But you would be perfectly logical to still believe that he never took PED's.

*However he's supposed to do that.

Yeah. The headline really could be, "Mattingly: Braun shouldn't be MVP, period".

Braun should have dealt with the stinging in the offseason instead of being a cheat3r.

Don't drag us into it, the Kiwi vote was heavily in Kemp's favour.

If Braun moved to Hollywood, he'd have to go door to door telling everyone he's a PEDerast.

No, just that he has to return the gift basket.
