McCalvy: Greinke pitching in behind the scenes

Brewers principal owner Mark Attanasio was praising Greinke’s intelligence and awareness when he revealed Saturday that Greinke asked for video of prospective Brewers Draft picks last May. He studied all of the top pitching prospects and offered recommendations before the Brewers selected pitchers Taylor Jungmann and Jed Bradley in the first round of the First-Year Player Draft.

Greinke is apparently back to work for 2012. On Friday night, he and Craig Counsell attended the Arizona State University baseball game in nearby Tempe to scout right-hander Brady Rodgers, whom the Brewers drafted out of high school in 2009 but could not sign. Melvin said he’d invite Greinke into the team’s Draft room in June if he’d like to attend.

Is this practice by active players common?

The're also letting take a look at the concessions numbers to see if he can find a way to boost profit margins and productivity.

"Mark, I've traded myself to La. It's whats best for the team."

This is great. I've always thought that a player who was interested in a post-playng baseball career should take the opportunity to poke around the entire operation.

Greinke = just another Chad Bradford Wannabe Wannabe

Gotta think this kind of stuff will make him want to stay in Milwaukee.

Or it will make him more attractive to other teams next offseason.

Or it will make him retire and do that lawnmowing/scouting service he's always wanted to do.

So much for the prescribed <bq> tag.

Anyway, more from Greinke on the good face:
Greinke said he thinks he found a diamond in the rough back home in Orlando - a college position player who he indicated was a low-round prospect. "I'm better on position players," he said. "I've been (scouting) since I was drafted, really. Two people I was really wrong on: I thought Prince (Fielder) was going to be too big to hit, and I thought (Dustin) Pedroia was too small to play. But you get proven wrong all the time. You learn from it and hopefully get better. I try not to write people off instantly like I used to."

Interesting since Greinke and Fielder went back-to-back in the draft, and IIRC, the Royals were torn between picking Greinke or Fielder.

For future reference, the tag you want to use is <blockquote>, battlekow.

They also knew each other from high school baseball in Florida.

I am aware. I was referring to the fact that the submit page directs you to use <bq>

See, that is why nobody bothers to read directions.
