“Logic! My God, the man’s talking about logic! We’re talking about universal Armageddon!”
Q: Do you think it would be in the Reds’ best interest to move Drew Stubbs to the leadoff spot in midseason if he starts to show signs of major improvement?
A: That’s beginning to look like one huge “if.” The strikeouts once again are mounting, and you don’t want your leadoff hitter striking out (or any hitter for that matter). If they do that, what do they do with Brandon Phillips? Right now Zack Cozart seems like a perfect No. 2 hitter. They could return Phillips to the cleanup spot. But from what we’ve seen so far from Stubbs, the bigger concern is if they can even keep him in the lineup.
Q: So when does Aroldis Chapman go into the starting rotation?
A: It’s the old saying about if the clock still is ticking, don’t tinker with the hands. In the Reds’ first three wins, Chapman had two of them and had a hold in the other, meaning he had his talented left hand in the middle of all three wins in less than a week out of the bullpen. If he were in the rotation, he would have made only one start in that span. Who knows if he would have won? Where he is right now is much, much better for the team.

Isn't that the one lineup spot where striking out is probably the most OK. You bat the least amount of times with men on base so you not wasting "productive outs". Sure there is the school of thought of putting the ball in play and letting the speed mess up the defense, but we see that performance in his batting average and reached on error numbers.
Stubbs is never going to be a great hitter. He is always going to K too much to post a decent BA and he won't hit for enough power to compensate. But he's apparently an excellent defender and baserunner and his walk rate can get him close to an average hitting CF which so far has added up to a well above-average player. He's Gary Pettis with more power or Corey Patterson with walks or a poor man's Dwayne Murphy. Those are all perfectly good players and you should be glad to have them for their cheap prime.
Then shouldn't every good pitcher be in the bullpen? This is a team that leaves Bronson Arroyo in the rotation, so that does seem to be what they're thinking.
First I've heard it in 50 years ... plus how else are you going to set the watch?
Actually, this guy was. As a 22 YO firstbaseman in AA he hit .227 with no power.
