Megdal: Mets ace R.A. Dickey explains his unmiraculous success

Greatest bin find since Knuckles O’Toole!

Still, after spending a decade and a half bouncing around the minor leagues, he’s in a particularly good position to appreciate what he’s got going at the moment.

“I do feel like as I have gotten older, and grasped a better understanding of what is important, it has made this experience very rich,” Dickey said. “On reflection, I don’t think I would have had the equipment, or possessed what it took, to enjoy the experience this deeply. It gives you real empathy for what it takes to get here, and I don’t take that lightly.”

Another function of his age, maybe, is that he’s remarkably self-aware, and frank, about the reasons for his success. One of them is simply that he’s figured out a way to play the game that’s not too hard on his body.

“I recover very quickly, because as a knuckleballer, I don’t operate at 100 percent capacity,” Dickey said. “So it allows me to work on my craft a little bit more, because it doesn’t take as much of a toll on my arm.”

when's he up for arbitration? if he has another year like this, the knuckleballer comparisons can be brought out on a silver platter...and he can make up for some of the lost money from 10+ years ago.

I really hope this isn't a one-year fluke. I genually enjoy watching him pitch. He throws his knuckler harder than most and is such a competitor (I recall how frustrated he was a month or so ago to be pulled when he'd been "on" and was starting to falter some, for instance). What a cool find for Omar. Seems he's not completely worthless.

The Mets have the chance -- who know how many ways it could go by the boards -- to have a very nice rotation again next season. Dickey is a huge part of that. If you think he's really the goods, then along with Santana and Niese, that is three very solid pitchers, who render Pelfrey an outstanding # 4, despite his inconsistent season this year. Mejia might just be ready to be the # 5, if not at the start of the year, then sometime during.

But if midnight strikes for Dickeyrella, then we aren't much better off than we were than we started off with Maine and Perez as "pillars" for 2010. A little, because the questions surrounding Santana coming off surgery seem to have been answered and Niese has been solid. But Dickey is just a huge plus, and needs to stay that way.

So, he admits that he doesn't give 100%. Fans should be pissed.

If the Mets were smart they would use the rest of the season seeing if Dickey can start on 3 games rest, and use him that way next season. If they could get 45-50 starts and 300+ innings out of him it would go a long way toward an NL East title.

Seriously? No. That's what they would do if they were the Mets- take a good thing and try to wreck it. He's doing fine as is. Why mess with him? Dickey is pennies from heaven. Niese's development was something that we could have optimistically hoped for, but Dickey came out of nowhere. They need to hold what they've got rather than trying to squeeze more out of him.

Oh, dear God. One of the guys in my old Strat-O-Matic league actually had a Knuckles O'Toole album, which he displayed prominently in his house. So I made ol' Knuckles the imaginary "general manager" of my Strat team, the Hoboken Zephyrs. Even wrote press releases (with O'Toole's name attached) and everything. Knuckles was a cantankerous sort, who actually shot Jarrod Washburn dead after giving up a game-winning grand slam. (I tore Washburn's card in half in disgust and refused to use him the remainder of the season.)

And behind Mejia is a kid who has just as much potential - Jeurys Familia throws as hard as Mejia and with the same GB tendencies. Worse control but more K-ability.

If injuries don't get to Niese/Pelfrey/Mejia/Familia, that's a very exciting young pitching core.

Meanwhile, the Mets may as well see what Dillon Gee can do before Mejia gets his shot.

Knuckles O'Toole (real name Billy Rowland) hard cover EP's were a 70/80's staple at good Goodwillian stores throughout the metro area!

Great rottin' stuff!

Well, it's a couple of mid-rotation starters, a nice prospect, and a guy with a 5+ ERA in the Florida State League. I admire your optimism, though.

so this guy spent 15 years bouncing around the minor leagues and suddenly he's got a 3 something ERA in the majors and he's not even giving full effort.

well if that isn't grounds to accuse him of shooting up roids i don't know what is

unless he can show that his back is as silky smooth as a grrrls

Familia has been doing really well of late though. In his last 31.2 IP, he has a 46/9 strikeout to walk ratio and a 2.56 ERA. He's definitely finishing pretty strong.

BTW, who is Josh Stinson and why is he in Triple-A already?

Famila struck out 10 and walked 2 in 5.1 IP last night.

Well, SSS and all, but that makes a difference, especially for a guy that young. He'll be interesting to watch in AA next year.

I tore Washburn's card in half in disgust and refused to use him the remainder of the season.

There was a member of one of my old strat-o-matic leagues that tore a carlos perez's card into 80+ pieces. I also had a guy rip his entire starting 9 in half against me in the last game of a 3 game set. He had only scored 1 run in nearly 3 games, and even that was a fluke. He taped them back up and laminated them so he couldn't do it again.

It was the same manager just a different year.

I've never tore or destroyed any of my SOM cards in season, but I used to write things on them constantly. I'd rename a pitcher Eric Milton almost every year, or I'd black out the one out I'd always roll with a hitter. Octavio Dotel was renamed "F*CKER" one year, his card was great but I had like a 5+ ERA with him.

Dillon Gee had another strong outing yesterday.
