Megdal: The poaching of Kevin Burkhardt

Well, after 2+ years of seeing “Friend Request Sent” on Burkhardt’s FB page…See-ya!

Kevin Burkhardt, seven-year veteran of New York Mets broadcasts, now nearing the end of his first full year as a lead broadcaster for Fox’s NFL games, had about an hour to revamp his preparation for the Eagles and Lions, thanks to a massive, unexpected snowstorm.

He glanced at co-commentator John Lynch, and the full moment seemed to hit him.

“I mean, this is awesome! Snow! You’ve got a playoff feel to this game!”

It would be one of the iconic moments of the 2013 NFL season.

A few days after that, Fox made it official that Burkhardt would be calling an actual playoff game this year, a huge reward for a first-year announcer.

Burkhardt’s primary gig at the moment is at SNY, the broadcast home of the New York Mets, where he’s been attached since 2007 as the sideline reporter alongside Gary Cohen, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez—a grouping of three strong personalities that might be the best television broadcast team in the sport.

Now, after years working at outposts like Jukebox Radio and WGHT-AM, he’s at the center of a legitimate bidding war between two television entities.

It is not an equal fight.

Burkhardt and Lynch are deserving of the assignment. I've enjoyed their work this season.

I hope he leaves SNY. He may be an extremely talented broadcaster and a genuinely nice guy but he's nothing but a giant unwelcome interruption with his "reports" during Mets games.

Yeah but it's not like they'll stop the in-game reports if he leaves, they'll just get somebody else to do them.

You're probably right. But while he was out this past year, the sideline reports were not nearly as long in duration - so at least there's that.

Because they work in New York ...

In this instance, no. Who ya got better?

Also, I'm sure Burkhardt's a great guy, but he is dull as dirt.

If it has to be a team of three, can I take Vin Scully, Nobody, and Nobody?
   8. Flynn Posted: December 24, 2013 at 03:11 AM (#4623322)
Miller, Flemming, Kuiper and Krukow.

I am an enormous fan of Miller, one of the absolute best; but I seem to recall one (or both?) of Kuiper and Krukow being vaguely unlistenable. Been awhile, though, I can't remember my Ks.

FWIW, might was written with San Francisco in mind, and team was written specifically for Scully. And no, New York has nothing to do with it. The team across town is in no danger of receiving the accolade from me.

And Crudale.

Very few people hear baseball broadcasts from other than the towns where they live so NY, LA and Chicago broadcasters get undue praise just from their population advantage.

I have no idea how the team from Colorado or Pittsburgh or KC or Seattle or YourTown sound. Seems like most fans worship their own town guys (Scully, the late Harry Caray, Hernandez) or hate them (Kay, Harrelson). Jon Miller has worked in different markets and has done national TV so he is sort of an exception that proves the rule.

There is also a bias if the ex-jock played for the team he now talks for (Kuiper, Krukow, Darling, Hernandez,Monday, Remy). In many cases, he gets a free pass to be boring, nasally or long-winded if he tells insider stories of Mickey in Spring Training or Sandy as a rookie, etc. If he talks about things like the Oriole Way, or Veteran Leadership or a Teammate he would go to war with, well, his talent is obvious.

I like both the Mets and Giants broadcast teams

KC has Rex Hudler, so they are one of the worst.

Burkhardt is no Chris Cotter!

Colorado has George Frazier, who is execrable.

Pittsburgh has a good broadcast team.

We all know Seattle has the 6th-best broadcast team.

Scully, Marcel Marceau, and Calvin Coolidge would do.

Burkhardt is no Chris Cotter Matt Yallof !

FTFY

I find that poaching Kevin Burkhardt can leave the meat a bit tough and flavorless. He's much better braised in red wine.

Burkhardt is no Chris Cotter Matt Yallof !

Someone at SNY once told me that whenever the crew would be talking baseball and Yallof walked in. They would stop talking about baseball.

I'll miss Burkhardt, but if SNY brings back Julie Alexandria I won't miss him as much.
