Memorabilia show organizer: Dykstra “has mental health issues”

Nuttiest thing to come out of Philly…since Rev. Heidnik lost a fortune on a Crazy Eddie investment!

If you were hoping Lenny Dykstra might re-schedule that sports memorabilia show appearance at the Oxford Valley Mall he blew off last weekend to participate in a celebrity boxing match in Hollywood (which he also blew off), don’t hold your breath.

The memorabilia show’s organizer Eric Poppel doesn’t want the former Phillies centerfielder back.

“I would never consider working with Dykstra again,” Poppel said in an e-mail message. “I firmly believe he has mental health issues and needs to get the proper aid.”

Poppel, who claims he’s been burned by Dykstra in the past, said he had a signed contract confirming Dykstra’s appearance at the Oxford Valley Mall event for Nov. 5-6. Then last Wednesday he found out Dykstra was scheduled to take part in the celebrity boxing match, and would not be appearing at the memorabilia show.

“I contact his minion/manager Dan Herman (a man Dykstra told Daily News gossip columnist Dan Gross was a “A starf***er” who booked the celebrity boxing gig without his consent and made up quotes in the press), who claims the boxing was supposed to be on another date,” Poppel told Phils-ville Wednesday. “He sends me a crazy e-mail how he will make this right, he’s a man of action, etc. Just another part of this Dan Herman/Lenny Dykstra game.”

If it makes him feel any better, Lenny did not fulfill his contractual obligations with the celebrity boxing #### show, either.

Please stop saying that Dykstra has mental issues. He's simply a jerk. Saying that he has some form of neurological disease insults those who have been duagnosed with a actual malady.

Bob, no offense but how can you possibly make that facile assertion? I would think you would almost have to be emotionally disturbed to sink to the level Dykstra has sunk. I think there's a little something missing from Pete Rose too.

Dykstra is certainly a psychopath, which is some sort of mental disease.

Today he tweeted "Im sorry, been lying for years.#forgiveme".

I don't think it's in any way condoning or excusing Dykstra's many transgressions (or insulting people who've been diagnosed with mental health issues) to say it's likely he's got some sort of mental illness(es).

Nor does suggesting he's got mental illness(es) in any way mean he's not also a jerk.

Yes, one can be both. They're not mutually exclusive. Nor is there necessarily a cause and effect. There could be, but neither one has to follow from the other. If drugs/alcohol are involved (hold the laughter down), or was and hasn't recovered, that, too, can be a contributing cause or exacerbation of a cause for either of those--being a mental case and/or being a jerk. That doesn't mean we are obligated to excuse his behavior. Mental illness doesn't mean mental incompetence--legal or otherwise.

Anyone who would stand in line and pay money for Dykstra's signature is probably a bit unbalanced as well.

What does # mean in the context of a tweet?

It's a tag giving the subject matter of a tweet, making it searchable under that tag.

EDIT: I'll tag this post: ##

There's a non-zero chance that he'd take a whiz on it after signing it, and then you could sell it for big bucks.
