This could be it for the sellout streak. It has its own momentum insofar as everyone knows that one can't simply walk over to Fenway on Game Day and buy tickets the way one would at most parks. But rationally it probably shouldn't be that way for certain games already; if enough people get burned and have to unload their tickets at a loss, at some point a threshold gets reached.

Indeed, Aragorn Guy.

And that'd be great news for anyone who doesn't like to have to plan their ballpark trips months in advance. Nobody would lose except the speculators.

People have been overestimating for years how hard it is to get tickets to Fenway

Just from personal experience I've had a more difficult time unloading tickets I wasn't going to use the last couple of years than I had in the past and I just sell to friends at face value. I think Nate's right, I'd say up through 2008 tickets were legitimately scarce, since then, it's been a "tough ticket" rather than an impossible one.

For the last four or five years, I've generally bought tickets during the winter sale. It used to be virtually impossible - I'd have several computers going and I'd still often not get in until it was scattered seats and standing room. The last couple of years have been much easier, and this year they started doing a virtual line instead of randomly allowing people in, and it was a breeze. Four or so years ago you'd never get near face value on StubHub, at least not in advance. If you live in Boston and can go on a moment's notice, I'm sure it's always been easier to get cheap tickets.

I'm pretty sure that was Ned Stark's line.

No kidding. I was in Boston during the 1986 ALCS and figured, no way will I get near attending a game. Come to find later that Games One and Two (when I was there) were not even technically sellouts; I could have gotten a ticket at the park.

Price can always be deterrent, but even at that, I have learned over the years not to rule out any sports ticket just because they'll supposedly be unavailable. They're an ephemeral commodity, and somebody will want to sell them, often rather urgently and last-minute.

I am still kicking myself for not going to the first (and so far only) playoff game at the Cowboys Stadium. That was not a sellout either ... and now it may be a long wait till they play the next one there :(
