Mets can’t dent Cubs’ Ryan Dempster, who reaches 27 straight scoreless innings - The Middletown Press : Serving Middletown, CT

“Just do your job!” Ryan Dempster is doing his job just fine.

Ryan Dempster is too busy watching “Swamp People” to see the stories about him being possible trade bait. He’s pitching too well, though, to know that he might be in another uniform by the end of the month.

Dempster extended his scoreless innings streak to 27 in his first start in three weeks, Starlin Castro hit a three-run homer and the Chicago Cubs beat the New York Mets 7-0 Sunday.

“I don’t really notice a lot of the rumors,” Dempster said. “I just handle what I can handle and that’s going out there and pitching and doing my job. Wherever the cards fall they fall.”

I'm very interested to see what Thed gets for Dempster in comparison to the mind-numbingly bad undersell of Ted Lilly.

Was the Lilly deal or the Maddux deal worse? At least in the Lilly deal, they got prospects, even if they weren't very good and didn't amount to much. And DeWitt was a youngish middle infielder with a half-decent track record. Hell, DeWitt was a semi-useful player as recently as last year.

But with the Maddux deal they only got a guy who was already washed up at 26. There was just no upside there, no matter how hard you squint. It was just a stupid, stupid trade.

Also, what say we use this as the July open Cubs thread? Seems like a good place for all the assorted trade rumors we'll be hearing for the next few weeks.

Doesn't someone have the keys to make such a thread in the blogpen? This thread will be buried in a day, while something in the blogpen would stay visible on the main page for a while.

Was the Lilly deal or the Maddux deal worse?

Maddux, hands down. Cubs gave up him AND cash to get Izturis.

I shall make a thread some point today for talk about the first half and trade rumors.

It will be interesting to see whether Dempster would command a similar price to Greinke. I wouldn't mind seeing him replace Strasburg in the late-season Nats rotation if you don't have to mortgage the future to get him. (And might the Cubs demand that any Dempster suitor take Soriano as well?)

I invite you to use the beta. Then subscribe to the Cubs Think Factory. I also invite you to submit links to Cubs articles.

After a hiatus to take care of some personal stuff, I'm getting back to work on things and should have some additional features available in the beta in the next few weeks.

The thread.

I couldn't get the Cubs tag to show up when trying to post it, and it isn't showing up anywhere on the front page yet. But it's there...

Next time somebody tells you what a genius Steve Stone is, remind them how much he raved about the Cubs acquiring Izturis, and how he wanted to trade Aramis Ramirez for him the year prior.

I fixed the posting page on the control panel so the primary tag now can be entered properly. I have updated the tags as well. I also updated the status so the entry appears on the old home page.

Next on my to-do list for the beta is updating individual profile pages. After that I'm working on creating the new submission pages. At that point I will work on the moderation tools before converting all the old content.
