Mets finally calling up one sizzling prospect [Jeff McNeil]

The Mets are calling up Jeff McNeil from Triple-A Las Vegas, The Post’s Joel Sherman confirmed Tuesday morning, after he tore up the Eastern League and then Pacific Coast League. The utilityman hit .368/.437/.600 in Vegas [after hitting .327/.402/.626 at AA Binghamton] and the Mets will hope he can help replenish a lineup that has struggled to produce.

The corresponding roster move has yet to be announced, though there is no shortage of expendable players in the Mets’ infield.

Is this the end of Jose Reyes?

Not convinced that he's really a prospect, but heck, give him a shot.

Are his vaccinations up to date?

Could he be worse than Reyes at this point?

Also, I'm actually kinda sad that Tebow got hurt. I was looking forward to the three ring circus surrounding his callup.

Cespedes to the DL.

Reyes lives!

I'm a believer in Jeff "Kent" McNeil. Well maybe not a believer, but I have some optimism. The knock on McNeil was always his lack of power, but he seems somehow (roids, whatever, who cares) to have learned to hit the ball out of the park.

The Dom Smith, outfielder experiment didn't last long.

The whole Dom Smith, professional baseball player experiment isn't going so well right now.
   8. Adam Starblind Posted: July 25, 2018 at 06:53 AM (#5715461)
Dom has never walked very much or hit for enough power, he's started to strike out a lot so his average has plummeted, and his defensive prowess seems to have been overestimated. Other than that, kid's going places.

Said places including Binghamton if he doesn't get his #### together.

Given that he had been young for his levels as he moved up the ladder, I expected him to solidify into something useful by the close of 2018.

Bautista, Mesoraco, and Cabrera will all be gone by this time next week. Hopefully Frazier gets healthy. Plawecki's been solid with the bat (for a C obviously), he'll take over the gig, McNeil at 2b replacing Cabrera, who the f knows what they'll be running out there in center, the denD Experience can't end quickly enough. Conforto's starting to hit, Rosario at leadoff for the last two months can't hurt.

The return on Britton--also a FA at the end of the year--really shows how badly the Mets mangled the Familia deal. Just a mess, and leaves me with no confidence in their ability to get anything for Wheeler if they elect to move him.

ex-GM Omar Minaya is still BFF with owner Jeff Wilpon and has a gig in the front office, but he doesn't like to actually work. his main obsession is international signing bonus money.

in fact, that's all he cares about. so watch to see if that's what happens in the coming trades.

Hopefully he has a better career than Jeff McKnight.

Ooooh Jeff McKnight burn!

Am I wrong in remembering that McKnight had bouts of semi-usefullness?

Not really my kind of music, but Brian McKnight's a talented guy.
   15. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: July 25, 2018 at 04:33 PM (#5715872)
I am not I want the Mets to move Wheeler. He's still under contract next year and a starting rotation of deGrom, Syndergaard, Matz, and Wheeler is good enough to contend. Obviously, that depends on health which will always be shaky but I have little confidence in their ability to get good value for Wheeler anyway.

Fuuuck...didn't realize he had passed away :( For some reason I had it in my head that he played more recently than 1994 AKA damn I'm getting old...

Russlan: I agree in general about the rotation...but it's not even August yet, and they already know they're going to be down Cespedes for at least part of the season, 8-10 month absence from heel surgery. Frazier doesn't look like he'll contribute much (I said Wilmer would be the better hitter in 2018---didn't expect the question to be settled with 2 months left to go in the season), they don't have a 2B or even a 1B, C will be a huge question mark, along with a lot of the bullpen. Nimmo, Conforto, Rosario, Bruce, and Frazier is not a lineup built to score enough runs to contend--especially considering that Wheeler and Matz have both been inconsistent.

Neither did I, though I try to keep up with players who hail from Arkansas.

Well...add the package the Jays got for 36 year-old reliever Seung Hwan Oh to those that are superior to what the Mets got back for Familia:
Blue Jays acquired 1B Chad Spanberger, OF Forrest Wall, and a player to be named later from the Rockies for RHP Seung Hwan Oh.

Spanberger, a sixth-round pick in 2017 out of the University of Arkansas, has put up a terrific .307/.365/.594 batting line with 41 home runs and 126 RBI through his first 152 professional games between the rookie-level Pioneer League and the Low-A South Atlantic League. The 22-year-old first baseman could rise quickly through the Jays' farm system.

Wall had slashed .260/.340/.410 with nine home runs and 28 stolen bases in 93 games this season between the Rockies' High-A and Double-A teams. The 22-year-old was a supplemental first-round pick (35th overall) in 2014 out of a Florida high school. He began his pro career as a second baseman but has recently been playing center field.

I was very unimpressed with the package the Mets got, but Oh is cheap (1.75 million) and has an option for next year for $2.5.
   21. formerly dp Posted: July 26, 2018 at 12:09 PM (#5716304)
Fair point. But it looks like both the prospects the Jays got are better than the top prospect the Mets had coming back their way. And although Oh is under contract for next year, he's a) older, and b) way less consistent than Familia--basically a successful reconstruction project by the Jays that they were able to very impressively flip.

Marcos Molina, former Mets prospect, suspended for rest of season

Anyone else remember that before the season, ZIPs had Marcos Molina's most comparable as Early Wynn? I thought that was ... peculiar.
