Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson Thinks Tim Tebow Will Play in the Major Leagues

Tim Tebow could be playing baseball at the highest level in the Mets organization sooner than many expected.

Position players, pitchers and catchers are already in Port St. Lucie, Fla. and if it hasn’t already joined them, Tebowmania is sure to be coming their way as well. On Sunday, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said he thinks Tebow “will play in the Major Leagues,” according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

In case there was any doubt that the Mets are a joke. But whatevs. I wonder what the MLEs are for a 307/356 line in St. Lucie.

Excluding guys who played in single-digit numbers of games last year, Tebow was 12th in OPS on his own team. He's also the oldest player on the team. And a left fielder. I know that there are football reasons for his late start, but Tim Tebow doesn't belong anywhere near Willits Point.

The headline should be "Sandy Alderson thinks it's a fantastic idea for you to invest your time and especially your money in the Mets if you like Tim Tebow".

They should go all in for a title run this year. See if they can sign Beyoncé, Tom Hanks, Ellen, and the Bieb.

As someone who grew up "Southern Baptist," with all the incredible moral baggage, guilt, and eventual animosity tending toward hatred, associated, the thing you have to do with all this, the important thing, is to just let it all go. Let those anti-science "believers" have their talismen (and they will be almost 100% men) espouse their whatever it is, without engaging in a way that stops us from more "nerdy" climes from carrying on, enjoying life, and enjoying the thoughtful, scientific interpretation of what goes on here on Planet Earth.

Yeah, I know this...from experience.

Dude can hit the curve ball, or he can't. "Saved" or not. That his ability to do so is somehow more important because he's "saved" is bullshit, but expending energy to point this out will NEVER be worth it. Never.

Will it sell more tickets in Peoria, or Cobb County, that's ultimately not really important is it? Unless you think it is, which is what we're really taught here, "Christian" or otherwise.

Pretty good advice, but if Tebow ever did show he had Major League talent the Mets would probably trade him for Dave Dravecky.

More precise headline: "Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson Says He Thinks Tim Tebow Will Play in the Major Leagues to Justify Yet Another Spring-Training Invite to Sell Tickets"

Heading to St Lucie for my first ST game on Saturday, don't care a bit about Tebow, but the drama makes things more fun. Agree 100% that Alderson doesn't think Tebow will never sniff the majors, this is all just to feed hype machine.

6 thru 8, yes. This is more-or-less like the Michael Jordan thing years ago.
4, I'm sorry for your bad experiences, but there was nothing in this article (or the 38-sec clip or Tebow speaking) about Christianity or Southern Baptists, so your screed is kinda misplaced. This is about $ for the Mets.

No one can deny that the $119.99 Tebow jersey will make MLBShop.com.
   11. Walt Davis Posted: February 18, 2018 at 11:42 PM (#5626750)
If Tebow is an ML talent, then Peter Alonso is the next Goldschmidt.

This seems not entirely out of the question, the kid had a good year.

But the reason it is making $$ for the Mets is because of the merchandising of both Christianity and celebrity. And his lasting celebrity is mostly due to religion (Christ and college football, take your pick). Given the particulars, I'm shocked the Braves aren't the ones that signed him.

I'm fairly agnostic on Tebow. I hope he doesn't get bumped up more than deserved but I also love it when longshots pay off. And it appears that, while he is no doubt taking advantage of his celebrity, he's also working hard to get better and is a good guy. I hate when people pile on guys who simply lack skill or talent. Pile on the Mets and the GM all you like. Tebow seems like a good guy to me.

I absolutely will not pile on the guy because of his beliefs. They are his to live with and if they make him content, so be it.

But I was peeved when he cut short his time in the Arizona Fall League to continue to be an announcer for the lesser sport. If he is going to be more than another Garth Brooks / Will Farrell after having missed more than a decade of development time, he needs to be fully bought in and not make this a part-time hobby.

This would describe how I feel as well.

I don't understand this comment. Smith was promoted at a fine pace and now has only Adrian Gonzalez's bloated corpse blocking him from the position.

What happens when Conforto comes back, assuming the other guys are healthy (I know, I know.) Does Bruce play first base or do they move Conforto to center?

Generally speaking, I can not stomach religious blowhards yet I have found it hard not to like Tebow. I guess he violates my rule of being a zealot who also has the ability to be a kind, decent fellow. Saw him in spring training last year at Joker Merchant and did he ever bust his butt going down the line. (Also went ass-over-tea-kettle-over-bullpen-mound chasing a foul ball (a little chuckler was had by all) but he is clearly trying very hard.)

Did his fame give him an opportunity that he never would have gotten otherwise? Absolutely but that's the way it goes.

If he makes a major league roster based on his name only so the Wilpon & Katz can $capitalize$ on it, well then that would be disappointing and yet oddly ironic.

These two points are exactly the basis for my comment, as both the signings of Bruce and Gonzalez will take at bats away from Smith. Sorry, I should have explained this further in my original post...

Now if the Mets announce they are moving Tebow to first base, then I will really get upset...

I'm confident in saying that Tim Tebow is a better baseball player than Charlie Faust was. And he played for the National League baseball team in New York...

I don't think Smith is good enough that you just give him the position for all of 2018 and see what happens. Some competition is fine. If the Mets somehow find themselves with too many excellent players to actually fit into the lineup, it'll be the first time that's happened in decades.
   24. Walt Davis Posted: February 19, 2018 at 03:49 PM (#5627013)
Ahem ... Dominic Smith has already made the majors and has 183 horrible PA to show for it. We should all be so lucky.

What if he makes it to the majors, hits a home run, and then after circling the bases, kneels at home plate?

He is free to believe what he wants, but making a public spectacle of them is in poor taste and against the teachings of Christ.

And Team Tebow will flood social media. Can't wait!

When he (or any other preachifyin' player) thanks the Lord for allowing him to strike out with the game on the line, let me know.

Sort of, although there's at least one sport where Michael Jordan was a good player.

I think it's more akin to the Padres bringing Garth Brooks to camp.

I've found the anti-religious zealots far more annoying and judgmental than anything Tim Tebow has done.
   30. Nasty Nate Posted: February 19, 2018 at 06:01 PM (#5627133)
Well, the important thing is that you've found a way to feel superior to both.

Jordan and Tebow seem to be of roughly similar baseball ability. We'll see what happens in AA this year. I assume they're promoting Tebow, because, why the hell not.
   32. bunyon Posted: February 19, 2018 at 09:28 PM (#5627201)
I hadn’t read about cutting the AFL time short. Not good.

I think he and Jordan are very similar this way: incredible athletic skills who took way too much time away from baseball to possibly make up at a relatively old age.
   33. willcarrolldoesnotsuk Posted: February 21, 2018 at 11:55 AM (#5628031)

He didn't really deserve the promotion from A to High A, did he?

Not snark; genuine question.

Mike Trout's first 160 or so PAs were even worse.

Tebow update: he's day-to-day after spraining his ankle falling over a water sprinkler.
