Mets GM Sandy Alderson takes leave of absence to be treated for cancer

New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson is taking an immediate leave of absence to undergo treatment for cancer.

Addressing the media Tuesday, Alderson said his cancer had returned in April and that he is undergoing chemotherapy. Alderson had previously been diagnosed with cancer in December 2015.

#### cancer.

Best of luck, Sandy.

Based on his comments at the press conference, it doesn't sound like Sandy is coming back. Is this season more dispiriting for the Mets than 1992 was?

Get well soon, Sandy!

A lot of resemblance, actually. Three or four reliable starters, everything else putrid.

This news is awful. A former Marine doesn't step off unless the ailment is pretty damn serious.

Mets team doctors

I swear they must be the same guys who were "looking after" the Red Sox a few years ago. It seemed like everyone got injured, then misdiagnosed, then given the wrong treatment, re-injured then out for the season. This seem to go on for like 4 seasons.

As for Sandy, good luck with the treatment.

My father-in-law had lymphoma 15 years ago, kicked it's arse. Had cancer in the gall bladder just recently, at 75 underwent more chemo and radio...and yeah, kicked cancer's arse again.
He's a tough guy my pop in law. Dude never complains, very old school and just about the nicest cat you could ever meet.

Friggin cancer just never goes away though. You beat it once and that sucker morphs into a new form and just reappears. It's a mean motherf*cker.

That's sort of its nature. It's what you die from if nothing else kills you. If none of your organs fail, eventually your cells are going to stop replicating properly. The vast majority of 90+ y.o. people have some form of cancer.

I have a 7-year-old cousin who has spent more than half her life in treatment. It's terrible and completely wrong but I sometimes consider 60- or 75-year-old cancer sufferers to be lucky.

Godspeed, Sandy Alderson. Mets fans will be forever grateful for 2015-'16.

EDIT: Oh, and yeah, #### cancer. It got both my parents.

Yeah - the modern prevalence of cancer is paradoxically a good thing, in that is shows the extent to which we've beaten most things.

Good luck Sandy. It's a tough row to hoe.

Oh, and #### cancer. It took my wife from me this spring.

Akrasian, I'm sorry. I hope you are eventually able to find your way to peace and gratitude for your time together, but it must hurt like hell right now.

Rusty - glad to hear you were able to make it through. Best wishes for continued good health.

when I wonder why this thread continues to go up the BBTF board - until I don't wonder.

I hit age 40 without even a single cancer punch in the face in my family, which is miraculous.

I have been punched several times since, and will be again.

nothing but the kindest of wishes to all here. it's a rough, divided world out there these days - but we do have common bonds.

we Irish aren't good at everything. but the Irish wake - parodied as just an excuse to get drunk (not denying it 100 pct) is actually the healthiest version I know.

of course, there is great sorrow. and eventually, there is a celebration of the life.

so why wait? while your closest people gather, toast the good fortune to have had that person in your life. that is a win.

One of the best days of my life was my grandfather's funeral -- the party afterwards was a great bonding experience for the grandkids who had been scattered around the country. And we're German!

Because hastening someone's death is illegal?

Akrasian, Rusty, others, my condolences and best wishes.

One of the coolest things about this board is that we're all just a line of blue letters. Here, I'll forever be the 30 year old I was when I found the place. It's hard to see when folks are suffering. So, for any who are, hang in there.

When my grandfather died, we had a terrific wake. It really was a celebration of his life. He made it to 96 so there were not a lot of regrets. But it was a real chance to bond with the family. As we are Irish, authorities believe alcohol was involved.

Thanks folks.

And Akrasian, I am really sorry about your wife. I realize how lucky I am.
