I didn't know the Mets had signed Lowrie. Does that mean Cano to 1B? Obviously with the ages of Frazier, Lowrie and Cano there's plenty of PT to be had by a backup. And it's not like Cespedes, Nimmo, Conforto, Lagares are a durable bunch, so there's plenty more for a IF/OF type if McNeil can handle it. Alonso seems stuck though.

It's still Cano at second, Alonso at first once the service clock says it's ok. Lowrie is the mythical "super utility" infielder. McNeil will mostly play outfield.

Alonso wasn't special in AAA last year. He put up a virtually identical line to Patrick Kivlehan and Bryce Brentz. I suspect he will have to earn his call-up by proving himself a better option than someone on the MLB roster.

I'm not at all convinced that Alonso is of service time games quality.

Sure he is, especially since they have solid options to cover the spot while they wait. If he's good (not at all a given, I'll grant), they gain a potentially valuable extra year of control in exchange for sacrificing some depth for a couple weeks. And if he's not, then nothing was lost by waiting.

He put up a virtually identical line to Patrick Kivlehan and Bryce Brentz.

He started off slow when they promoted him to AAA in June and then adjusted in a big way. He found his power in July and then hit the snot out of the ball in August and September (~1.100 OPS). Kivlehan and Brentz, by contrast, are each almost 30 years old. Don't make silly comparisons.

Mets GM was on radio here yesterday.

plans include:
- Cano will no longer start 150+ games. maybe 140. sits vs tough lefties. may play 1B in late-inning double switches. (Mets expect DH in NL in 2020, which improves the Cano trade.)
- Lowrie is an every-day player whose position is "batting second." lots of 3B but all over. is only real MLB guy who used to play SS, but that wasn't mentioned. Rosario plays 162?
- Frazier will play some 3B and some 1B.
- Alonso + JD Davis will team for 30 HR at 1B, he claims.
- career MLB .304-hitting INF TJ Rivera remains invisible.
- as noted, McNeil no longer is an INF, basically. will start in OF vs righties with Conforto and Nimmo. (any of the 3 may play CF.)
- the other OF options are Lagares and Broxton.
- he "hopes" Cespedes will play at all in 2019.

That's super interesting about them planning for Cano around the impending addition of course the DH. Basically McNeil or Lowrie could be back at 2b next year, when they'll have Cespedes back in the OF rotation. Still think Pollock made a ton of sense for this team. Unless the Mets decided McNeil is unplayable at 2b...but this is an org that stomached Flores and Murphy there.

I'm guessing Rosario plays 162. Espinoza is the in case of emergency break glass guy, I think.

now someone posted elsewhere that no DH in NL until new collective bargaining agreement. is that true?
