Mets lay down gauntlet for ‘mediocre’ Travis d’Arnaud: Now or never | New York Post

“He’s really stayed with his mechanics,’’ hitting coach Kevin Long told The Post before offering these heart-of-the-matter comments about where d’Arnaud needs to improve. “I feel like he has done a really good job of staying more consistent. We stay on him every day about doing the exact same thing.

“Reality has set in and he is saying, ‘I better get this done.’ You say, ‘How much longer can I be mediocre?’ He’s got a high ceiling, it’s time that he gets there,’’ Long said. “He’s got to push himself to be a better player, a better hitter.

He may be mediocre, but his second-most similar batter will probably be elected to the Hall of Fame once he's eligible.

He's about 1 WAR, giving up significant playing time to Rene Rivera. The Mets have much bigger problems.

d'Arnuad has been a disappointment, as it was reasonable to hope that he'd be a solidly above average player at that position after his 2015 season. The Mets have a lot of holes going into next year, so they are likely stuck with their catcher situation. He has not been awful, but not great either.

The only problem is that he starts to get expensive next year. He is arb eligible this year (2018 season)

But the Mets will/should have a ton of money to spend in 2018. Can't see them upgrading at catcher this winter...

He'll get paid like a mediocre arb-eligible catcher. That's not a real problem.

He was already under arb this year -- got a whopping $1.9 M. He's in line for maybe about $4 M for 2018 then (depending on how he does) maybe $6-7 the year after that, then he's FA.

It's not usually a bad thing when your team is paying someone a lot of money in arbitration. It usually means that the player is doing well, and is a value at that price.
