Mets, Matt Harvey rethink Tommy John rehab plan after elbow injury to Jeremy Hefner

This is becoming uncomfortably like a parent trying to get their teenager to do something without telling them to do it…

As word leaked out of the Mets organization about Jeremy Hefner having re-injured his elbow, one official made a point of noting, off the record, that injured ace Matt Harvey had a front-row seat to see a pitcher have a major setback after Tommy John surgery.

Tuesday, Sandy Alderson was not so subtle.

The Mets general manager said Hefner’s injury, which will likely require a second Tommy John surgery, has the team reassessing Harvey’s rehab process. It could prevent him from throwing a pitch in a minor-league or fall league game this year.

“We’re going to have a discussion with the doctors about whether the protocol should change for Matt. I have talked to Matt himself,” Alderson said…

While admitting that doctors have told the Mets that a re-injury such as Hefner’s is extremely rare, Alderson said he will talk to Harvey about the process the rest of the way. He described the 25-year-old as “reassessing” his situation.

“My sense is that Matt will at least take this into account,” Alderson said.

Harvey has been very vocal about his desire to pitch “even one inning,” this season.

um, if it was "off the record" we wouldn't be reading it.

"not for attribution" is the phrase

They could have just pointed to Mike Pelfrey over in the Twins org as a lesson on Don't Do That! re shortening time on TJS rehab.

On the sidebar, this headline shows up as "Mets, Matt Harvey rethink Tommy John rehab plan after elbow injury..."

I was about to throw myself out of a window. Glad I visited the actual thread and article first.

3 is a comment not off the record
5 is better as a parody than a typo

off the record is off the screen
if someone tells you where to look for something or what court document to look for, or what presser to attend - "off the record" - that's how a lot of journalism gets done.

fun when someone says "who told you..."

geesh, we'd go to jail first.

Escalation:
"I threw a bullpen today and I didn't miss a spot," Harvey said Wednesday evening during an interview on ESPN New York 98.7. "I felt like I was easily throwing into the low to mid 90s, with pretty much no effort.

"I know there's a process, but as a competitor I want to get out there as soon as possible."

Collins said he and Mets pitching coach Dan Warthen were supposed to speak with Harvey by telephone early Wednesday evening, but Collins said after the Mets' 3-2 loss to the Washington Nationals that they were never able to make contact with him.

"We tried to get a hold of him, but he was talking on the radio," Collins said facetiously.

"One of the reasons we have tried to back Matt off is how he is mentally. This guy is a bulldog. There is no such thing as low speed or low gear. It's all-out forward. There was a phone call made [Tuesday] where it was, 'Yeah, we've got to back this down,' and [Wednesday] he throws a 27-pitch bullpen.

"I'm going to put my head through the wall."

The Mets have been trying to hold Harvey back, and general manager Sandy Alderson said Tuesday that Jeremy Hefner's recent setback in his own comeback from Tommy John surgery should be viewed as a "cautionary story" for Harvey.

Alderson also said the Mets may now ask Harvey not to pitch in any kind of game before spring training.

Harvey told ESPN New York 98.7 FM that he took note of what happened with Hefner, but he also made the point that everybody is different.

The Mets stop being polite and start getting real...
