Mets move OF Anderson to 15-day DL, recall Murphy

The New York Mets placed outfielder Marlon Anderson the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring Saturday and picked up the contract of Daniel Murphy from Triple-A New Orleans.

Anderson is hitting .222 with one home run and 10 RBIs in 73 games this season. He said his hamstring has bothered him since he tweaked it in the Mets’ first road trip to Colorado in late May.

“Nobody wants to go on the DL, no matter what it is,” the 34-year-old outfielder said. “There is always a letdown when you can’t be out there. But I think it’s best in the end, to get this thing worked out and taken care of.”

Murphy went 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored on Friday night for New Orleans after hitting .308 with 13 homers, 67 RBIs and 14 stolen bases at Double-A Binghamton. The 23-year-old player will make his major league debut starting in left field Saturday night.

“I’m a big believer in, once a guy gets to the big leagues, I don’t want him to sit around and think about it,” Mets manager Jerry Manuel said. “I want him to get out there and play as quickly as possible.”

Manuel is optimistic Anderson will need only the 15 days to recover. “Hopefully, this two-week period will give him a real good chance to get that thing as strong as he can,” Manuel said. “He’s been pretty much playing on an unstable leg. We’re going to try to find out if we can get some kind of stability in there.”

I really hope the Mets didn't let Anderson play on an "unstable leg" all this time. He's not talented to be much of a help if he's hurting. Met minor leaguers are probably going to get a fair share of playing time the rest of the way.

Trot Nixon is tanned, rested, and his rehab from sports hernia surgery is progressing nicely.

Met fans are optimistic Anderson will need over 15 days to recover.

I think he should take at least 3 months to recover. We don't want him to reinjure himself or risk permanent damage.

Murphy's MLE from AA:

.233/.291/.360

This isn't going to be pretty, but it's actually quite a bit better than Anderson has given them.

Bear in mind that Randy Winn is available for a used catcher's mitt or a wad of chewed gum...

Can Murphy pitch in the 8th inning too?

I gotta say, I'm pretty surprised that the Mets or Tampa didn't pick up any of the numerous mediocre-but-acceptable or solid-but-unspectacular OFs before the deadline. Seems like there was a lots of decent OF depth out there.
Winn, Kotsay, Ibanez, Marlon Byrd, Huff.

Jerry Hairston isn't this good of a hitter but hes decent and hes been killing the ball this year, plus hes got some IF/OF versatility.

Why the #### can't Schoeneweis, Smith, Heilman, Sanchez and Feliciano get hurt? God what a horrible loss.

And when the definitive history of the Mets is written, in the "Top Ten Worst Decisions" chapter will be, somewhere probably in the top 5, "Willie Randolph and Rick Peterson insist Aaron Heilman be a reliever". A decision that stinks to high heaven in so many ways.
