This headline deserves to be mocked.

No sh!t, Sherlock. You figure that out all by yourself?

EDIT: TFA is pretty mock-worthy, as well.

I clicked on this one to post "Yeah, that's kind of how math works."

Not necessarily. Maybe their plan is for the Phils and Braves to just start playing poorly.

The 1973 Mets beg to differ.

The 2006 World Champion St. Louis Cardinals were never contenders.

Terry Malloy could have been a contender.

The Mets should win more games if they would like to make the playoffs.

Yeah, that worked once...once...

Mets must descend from .500-area limbo to be true failures

The 1994 Rangers stayed away from the .500 area. That's why they finished in first.

I always like, "...if they hope to win," as if that is in doubt.

Word salad, for sure. Other options:

Mets must play like true contenders to get over .500

Maybe?

Mets must get over .500-area to truly limbo under non-contender status

A bit convoluted...

To be true contenders, 500 area Mets must limbo!

Winner! Envision Lee Mazzili, Tim Teufel, and Frank Taveras in Hawaiian shirts and lei's.

They should change the headline to "Mets’ first hurdle to contention has been mocking them all season."

In the NY office when there is something just completely ###### up the code word to describe this is "Mets". Not my pick, comes from Mets fans. Client contact sends completely useless files but client contact is expecting deliverables ahead of schedule and telling us that per their internal people 'we have everything'. That is a "Mets"
