Mets narrow GM search down to three: Doug Melvin, Brodie Van Wagenen and Chaim Bloom

I say Melvin gets it.

On Monday, the Mets eliminated MLB executive Kim Ng and Tigers VP of player development Dave Littlefield from consideration, according to sources, leaving Doug Melvin, Brodie Van Wagenen and Chaim Bloom as the remaining known candidates for the job.

I'm shocked that Littlefield didn't make the cut.

What happened with that Cardinals player development guy?

"Brodie Van Wagenen?"
   3. PreservedFish Posted: October 22, 2018 at 03:52 PM (#5772591)
Brodie Van Wagenen was on the crew team with Wilpon Jr.

"Brodie Van Wagenen?"

Either a sports agent or the bad guy in some 1980s slobs versus snobs comedy, I believe.

Brodie Van Wagenen

Agent for Tim Tebow, among others.

Apparently Neil Armstrong was his father-in-law.

This is depressing.

Hawk Harrelson would listen if the Mets called.

Actually, he would probably just talk over them.

At least Kim Ng gets a boost to her frequent flyer miles every offseason.

An agent, even an ex-agent (even with a fairly long intervening time), becoming a GM seems like just asking for trouble, no matter how thoroughly they divest themselves of the agency stuff.

Makes sense. Sure.

Brodie Van Wagenen

I love the boldness of mom and pop doubling down on "Van Wagenen" by going with "Brodie" as a first name.

ooh, checked wiki. Brodie married Neil Armstrong's daughter. EDIT: Dammit, I have to gave in Inge to Dave, and that is never supposed to happen.

I can picture those awkward conversations as he shows up for their fourth or fifth date.

"Son, I have been to the moon. Have YOU been to the moon yet, IF you know what I mean - and I think you do?" [elbow to the ribs]

Brodie's wife is named Molly, and they both went to Stanford. of course they did.

Brodie went to Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino, CA, where similarly-named Trevor Plouffe also went through about $70K in high school tuition to graduate. actual school motto: Zelo Zelatus Sum Pro Domino Deo Exercituum. (With zeal have I been zealous for the Lord God of Hosts.)

Brodie, at CAA Sports, landed Cespedes his current three-year, $75M with the Mets that is paying off so handsomely (for Cespedes). also the 10-year, $240M that got Robinson Cano away from the Yankees and into relative witness protection.

I am all aboard the Brodie train!

With zeal have I been zealous
Well, yeah. What's Latin for "With redundancy I have reiterated myself?"

And I do expect someone here to be able to actually answer that.

Wonder if he'll bring on Gussy Fink-Nottle or Tuppy Glossop.

Candidates will have to pass an initial screening, meaning the use of a first initial followed by full middle name.

It certainly went well when Dave Stewart ran the Diamondbacks.

Based on the examples, Mr. van Wagonen is welcome to negotiate on my behalf at any time.

I Love that Chaim Bloom isn't even the name that is interesting for us to be talking about. Chaim Bloom?
   18. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: October 23, 2018 at 06:48 AM (#5772845)
van Wagonen is also Jacob deGrom's agent RIGHT NOW. That seems like a conflict of interest in a massive way.

Bloom is with the Rays as Assistant GM, and my memory of Melvin is of him doing a pretty good job with the Brewers, so either of them will likely be cromulent.

It's a very Jewish name. Anything else interesting?

At least he could teach how to throw a forkball.

Imagine if you ran a team with no intention of winning ballgames.

I was going to say that two of these guys have names that sound very New York City to me, in very different ways. Delancey Street vs. Park Avenue.

Question 1 for the finalists: It's April 25th, and Amed Rosario goes down for the year with a dislocated spleen. You've heard through the grapevine that Jose Reyes would listen if the Mets called. What do you do?
A) Call Jose Reyes
B) Not call Jose Reyes
   26. PreservedFish Posted: October 23, 2018 at 10:53 AM (#5772955)
I think I'm done with Reyes.
   27. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: October 23, 2018 at 10:56 AM (#5772956)

I'm sure Van Wagonen would have to divest of any financial interest in CAA before becoming the GM. But hopefully it would help the Mets retain deGrom to hire his (former) agent.

I had a similar thought, especially when Kim Ng was also still in the running. I look forward to the Broadway play / 80s nostalgia movie about this GM search.

Bloom was a Classics major at Yale and wrote a few articles for BPro, the first one when he was 14 years old.
   28. PreservedFish Posted: October 23, 2018 at 10:58 AM (#5772957)
Actual answers:

Melvin: "B. Call Jose Reyes"
Van Wagenen: "My client Jed Lowrie has just demanded a trade, and is looking for an extension."
Bloom: "I'm planning to hide Jerry Blevins at shortstop when a righty is up."

Hopefully New Mets GM is too...

This will always be what the name "Brodie van Wagenen" means to me. This was my dorm and the guy he punched was a friend of mine. I was probably at this party, though I did not see it happen.
