Mets pitchers strike out 26 Braves batters in 14 innings

New York Mets pitchers struck out 26 Braves batters last night. That ties a major league record for strikeouts in a game. Four other teams have performed the feat. The Mets joined the the then-Anaheim Angels, however, as the only two teams to strike out 26 batters and lose. Those Angels fell to the Brewers 1-0 in 17 innings in 2004. The Mets fell to the Braves last night, 2-1.

Jacob deGrom led the charge with 13 Ks in seven innings of work, with his only blemish being an RBI single surrendered to Freddie Freeman in the sixth inning. deGrom atoned for that himself, however, hitting a home run off of Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz in the bottom of the sixth to tie things up at one. That’s how things would remain when both starters left the game and it moved on to extra innings.

The people who have been singing the praises of the TTO have a lot to answer for….

DeGrom was fantastic; he was throwing 99 MPH and hitting the edge of the plate in the 7th inning, at 100 pitches.

I saw a headline on the Athletic this morning about the Cy Young not being out of reach of Max S., because of Riu's struggles recently. Has anyone there looked at DeGrom's season?

deGrom and Scherzer are tied to the decimal place in both Fangraphs and BR WAR as of today.

That was tough on the Mets, but DeGrom on Friday night reminded me of youth baseball where "that kid" on the other team is the best pitcher, hitter and fielder on the field (and if it were youth sports, DeGrom would have moved to shortstop after he stopped pitching in the 8th, and would have made 3 fabulous plays from there, which in real life, he no doubt could have done).

I was at this game - all 14 innings of ultimate pain!

The Red Sox in the last 4 seasons have K'd 21 in 9 innings twice now. You won't find them in the record book tho (most K's by a team in a game) since both games went to extras, and TPTB have declared that the game must end in regulation to count. I was at one of the games note.

Same. I can't believe Conforto couldn't just hit a medium deep fly ball! I was sure they were going to win right until I realized Familia was entering the game.

deGrom and Scherzer should both be right there with Ryu. He has a small lead in RA-9 WAR, but is behind in bRef WAR, and way behind in fWAR.

as soon as the count on the first batter went to 2-0, the game was over.

because of a favorable replay call on a double that got stuck in the wall, there was literally about a 10-minute sequence where the game was still tied but the Mets were still doomed. it was... odd.

Journeyman Tom Cheney notched 21 K's against the Orioles in 1962, in a 16-inning CG win. Has anyone else topped 20 with the aid of extras?

Cheney is the only one with 21+ K's in a game, extra innings or not. All five pitchers with 20-K games pitched exactly nine innings. Nolan Ryan had three extra-inning 19-K games and Luis Tiant had one.

There have been 73 games where a team had 20 or more strikeouts, and ten of them have been this year.
