Mets Sign Ken Phelps All-Star Val Pascucci

Just how or when the Mets will choose to address the Carlos Delgado problem is uncertain at this point, but that hasn’t stopped the club from adding another first baseman/outfielder to the roster at Triple-A New Orleans. Valentino Pascucci, released from the Phillies this week, has joined the Zephyrs after batting .232 with one home run and seven RBIs in 25 games for Lehigh Valley.

The righthanded-hitting Pascucci, 29, showed some power last season, when he led the Pacific Coast League with 34 home runs. He also finished fifth in on-base percentage (.389), fifth in slugging (.577) and fifth in extra-base hits (62). The Zephyrs’ current first baseman, Michel Abreu, also 29, is batting .272 (28-for-103) with two homers and 10 RBIs in 26 games.

I love this signing. It tells me that Omar does know what he's doing.

Let's hope that Pascucci shows last year wasn't a fluke.

could he really do worse than Delgado is doing right now?

Looking at his career lines, he's pretty much mashed everywhere. I hope he gets a shot again at some point.

This guy was a stathead favorite when an Expos prospect.

I'm not convinced that a lumbering corner guy that couldn't hang in Japan is really the answer to any of our problems. But, a fine little signing, I guess. Better Delgado insurance than we had previously.

Julio Franco is still a free agent. He's back in the Mexican leagues.

Since I suggested this last week, I'm going to assume that Omar is listening to me. That being the case, I think the Mets should go out and sign Barry Bonds.

so where was he in 2005? I know he played in Japan in 2006--but his minor league record jumps from 2004 to 2007

was he injured in 05?

It appears that Pascucci was playing in the Japanese minor leagues for the majority of 2005. He was blocked from a spot on the big league club by Matt Franco and Benny Agbayani. Woohoooo! But seriously, I'm sure he can outhit Delgado against lefties.
