Mets sign Miguel Batista, Fernando Cabrera & Sean Kazmar

It will be hard to be ripped off in any future S. Kazmar trade.

The Mets have signed free-agent RHPs Miguel Batista and Fernando Cabrera to minor league contracts, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

Also, the Mets have signed SS Sean Kazmar,” who will go directly to minor league camp,” Adam Rubin added on Twitter.

Batista appeared in nine games for the Mets and 26 games for the Cardinals in 2011. Overall, he had a 2.42 ERA in five starts and a 4.50 ERA in 30 relief appearances, during which he struck out 31 batters in 59 innings.

Did anybody else see "Mets" in the headline and subsequently read the last name as "Scott Kazmir"?

I think that might be what the Mets did.

One of the BA guys (Matt Eddy) did that today, before correcting himself.

I will say this regarding the Marshall trade --

That's not a trigger I think I pull in the offseason - for a very, very good reliever who is LH, but not at all limited to being a LOOGY, that's the sort of thing I'd rather trade midseason. Panicked teams just seem more willing to do something stupid for relief help, especially prime help, in midseason than they do in the offseason. I'm not saying teams knowingly make Andersen-Bagwell swaps, of course -- but I just think the returns are likely to be better in July when you might well have 2-3 teams desperate for bullpen help.

Also, the Mets have signed SS Sean Kazmar

...and then immediately traded him for Carmelo Zimbrino in an attempt to trade for the right Zimbrino this time.

Okay, how about Marshall for Kazmar?

Is Scott retired? He didn't sign with anyone after being cut by LA.

The world has lost another 50 year Met fan. My father passed away this morning from pneumonia. His father was a Brooklyn Dodger scout, so you can guess where Dad stood on the "are scouts passe" debate. I loved watching games with him. His favorite whipping boy was Kranepool, who he called "Mr. Ed" and said was the all time leader in ground balls to second base. RIP Dad. We love you.

Benji, I hope you feel him with you as you watch more Mets' victories than any of us are expecting this season, and that you hear his voice talking you through the bad stretches. May he rest in peace.
