Mets to change Citi Field address to honor Tom Seaver, will unveil plans for statue

The Mets will be permanently changing the address of Citi Field to honor Tom Seaver, the team announced on Thursday, with full details to be released at a later date.

In addition, the team will be unveiling plans this June for a statue to honor Seaver, Mets chief revenue officer Lou DePaoli said, according to Newsday.

“We’ve been working on exploring a potential statue option for a couple of years in coordination with the [Seaver] family,” DePaoli said. “We won’t be unveiling a statue this season. We will unveil the plans of what it will look like sometime on that [‘69] weekend.”

It's a shame all of this happened after Seaver's dementia diagnosis and retirement from public life. Of course that's probably the reason all this is happening.

The timing of this announcement is terrible. I supposed they woke up to newspapers saying, "the Mets really ought to have a permanent monument to Seaver, other than his number retired". Better late than never, but it's obviously too late.

Knee dragging on the ground. How ####### hard was that?

Seaver was a big fan of the original Batman series and the guy who played Dr. Hickman on Bonanza, so they are going to change the address to 1060 West Addison.

Not to be bleak, but I really hope they don't finish this within the next 18 months and drag Tom, lost, out to the stadium for the unveiling. And then when they don't do that, it is primary in everyone's mind where he is and why he's not at the stadium. So they were too stupid to do this earlier, and are now too stupid (and greedy) to properly wait until he's dead.

The FO fucked this up in only the way the Mets FO is able to fuck things up.

Seaver was pretty good for the White Sox in the mid 80's. I remember watching his 300th win, against the Yankees I believe. I couldn't remember how the WS got him, and according to BBREF, he was a free agent compensation pick from the mets in Jan 1984. But damned if I can find a member of the 1983 WS who left for free agency. The closest was Dick Tidrow, who the WS released and was later signed by the Mets. But surely they didn't give compensation for players who were first released, did they?

edit: Found it. it was Dennis Lamp. That worked out well for the White Sox.

Seaver also was in the dugout, in Red Sox uniform, for the 1986 World Series famously won by the Mets.
but he was sidelined due to injury and never pitched again.

well, he tried in 1987 - with Bill Simmons

Knee dragging on the ground.

That was my initial reaction, to the best possible pose for the statue. Utterly and truly iconic.

Yes. I was at Yankee stadium for that, specifically hoping to see that. My older brother, who passed last year, was my guest. It was also Phil Rizzuto day, the day he almost got knocked on his keister by a halo-adorned "Holy Cow".

Good day all around.

He didn’t get knocked on his keister. He got knocked on his back instead.

So sorry to hear about your brother :(
