Mets trade Keon Broxton to the Orioles

The other day the New York Mets designated the ineffective — and frustrated — Keon Broxton for assignment. I would’ve bet a decent sum that Broxton would just be released at the end of all of that but they found a trade partner: the Orioles, who just acquired Broxton from the Mets for $500,000 in international bonus money.

Not a bad haul, really, all things considered. Broxton was batting .143/.208/.163 in 53 plate appearances. Getting half a million extra bucks to spend on an international free agent is worth more than that production, that’s for sure.

As for the Orioles: they have nothing to lose. Why not see if a chance of scenery and a better fit gives them something — anything — out of Broxton.

Operation Shutdown II takes a surreal turn.

Isn't international money a finite resource? This very well could impact who the Orioles might sign next year. Or not, I don't know how much they have in bonus money. Seems like the O's should be aggressively going after international signees though, really seems like a way to get some good players for cheap.

By this point, teams have a pretty good idea who they are signing and for how much. It could have an impact, but there are only so many guys you really want to hand big money to.

The O's get a terrible player AND they have an excuse to spend $500k less. What a win!

Also, the Orioles don't usually spend big on Int'l FAs anyway. I think they've had multiple years where they spent under their cap. It's a stupid thing to do, but if you're going to waste the money anyhow, might as well trade it.

The Orioles claimed they had changed their ways, and actually added international bonus pool money last year to pursue the Victor Victor Mesa Mesas, but then traded some of it away when they were spurned. Doesn’t seem like they have a real plan here.

I think Elias recently said they expect to be more active this summer, but we'll see.

So they're going to try Broxton at pitcher, right? He's got to be better than their present crew, and he already hits like a pitcher anyway...

Broxton's career OPS+ is 86, which is fine from a plus center fielder. Color me unsurprised that Calcaterra's reading of the trade is based on 53 sporadic plate appearances.

Broxton's issue is basic in that striking out 40 percent of the time sucks as an approach because generating a babip of .330 to stay on the right side is not easy. But the dude is almost 30 so him cutting back to say 30 percent and still rocking the power is not likely. Always dig watching him play though. His 2016 was electric

Teams are still trading pool money for the 2018-19 signing period. The Orioles loaded up on pool money last season* in an effort to woo Cuban outfielder Victor Victor Mesa, who signed with the Marlins.

With Mesa and other attractive free agents already signed, this is effectively money the Orioles can't spend.

* They netted $2.75 million in two trades with the Braves involving Kevin Gausman and Brad Brach. Why were the Braves so generous? Because that was international money they couldn't spend because of penalties.

The soft bigotry of low expectations?

Do the Orioles have some hitherto-unnoticed need for a 29-y.o. center fielder who can't hit?

Their Opening Day CF is hitting .094. They're putting a utility infielder who was DFA'd in March in CF right now. Broxton is a plus defender (or at least is capable of plus defense at times). He has controllable years. If he can cut down his K rate a bit he can be a pretty useful player. Just a few months ago, the Brewers got 3 minor leaguers for him. Makes sense to buy low and give him some playing time in the hopes that someone else wants him as a 4th OF.

International bonus pool "money" isn't actual money, it's the opporutnity to spend money, right?

The Braves got to trade that!? Real tough penalty there...

Yes. The Orioles sent $0 to the Mets.
