MetsMerizedOnline.com:  White Hot [Peter] Alonso Named Eastern League Player of the Week

Overall, Alonso is hitting .403/.500/.778 with six doubles, seven homers, and 18 RBI.

Those stats make him the league leader in batting average, OBP, SLG, OPS, runs, hits, homers, extra base hits, and total bases. Simply put, Alonso has been dominating the Eastern League.  If he keeps this up, we may very well see him accumulate many more awards this season.

In case you didn’t know the Mets had a prospect.  Alonso is a former 2nd round pick and is a few months older than Dominic Smith.  He also may be a much better baseball player.  How long before he supplants Smith and the corpse of Adrian Gonzalez?

Make that now .408/.505/.776

That's a nice start.

Dominic Smith by the way is .272/.398/.407 in Vegas. His power really comes and goes, and he's striking out way more than he ever has previously, more than 1 a game, which does not translate to a major league player without light-tower power.

Stick a catcher's mitt on him.

Fun news, thank you.

The Mets have to add a catcher at some point, yeah? I'm inclined to trust that Plawecki can handle himself at the plate enough to be a decent option (very good at AAA in 2016 & 2017, but also sufficiently old by then).

1B: the obvious solution is to just play Wilmer there every day, or platoon him with Bruce. Flores' stats don't look great this year, but that's mostly the result of a .182 average on balls in play--his walk rate is up this year, and his strikeout rate is down. Gonzalez just had his first decent day at the plate in a month, so they'll probably run him out there for another 30 games...

"Yonder Alonso?"

"No, this one here. His name is Peter."

Also, he should go by "White Hot Peter" for the rest of his career.

What gives us reason to believe Plawecki, with a woeful wOBA of .272 in 555 PAs, will suddenly learn how to hit a baseball? If Sandy decides not to trade for a backstop, give Nido the playing time.

Yeah. Nimmo/Lagares in center, with Conforto in right and Bruce/Flores at first seemed like the obvious play before the season, and it's even more obvious now. Eventually, Callaway has to realize that Nimmo can hit as well as Gonzales while significantly improving the defense, no?

What makes you think Nido can hit, Jason? Plawecki may not have shown an ability to hit MLB pitching, but Nido hasn't even proved he can hit AA pitching.
   10. Lassus Posted: May 01, 2018 at 12:04 PM (#5663638)
Yeah, while I agree with Jason, they both seem to suck.

I don't and Lassus may be right but Nido's more than three years younger than Plawecki. Until/Unless a trade happens, give him the lion share of PAs.

Plawecki did hit well in the minors. I would give him a shot. I don't think he will ever be a good hitter, but should do well enough for catcher. He also did pretty well last year and he is a good defensive catcher.

and he is a good defensive catcher.
Other than being pretty good at pitch framing, I'm not seeing it. When was the last time Plawecki threw out a would-be base stealer?

Keith Law rated Nido the 16th best prospect in the Mets system; BPro rated him no. 6.

I consider him a real prospect.

Fat AAAA guys usually strike out a ton, Alonso doesn't (15 in 21 games this year; 64 in 82 games last year). He's 23 in AA, which is reasonable. Last year he hit 286/.361/.516 with 16 hr, so this isn't *completely* out of nowhere. He's also got a pretty good pedigree (2nd round draft pick out of the University of Florida).

In other words, there's no reason to think he's Mike Hessman.

Peter Alonso is. Are we not even reading full headlines these days?

I never heard of someone being called WHITE HOT before. Red hot for sure, but white hot? On the spectrum of hotness, is white considered the hottest, or is there another hot that is hotter than white?

Generally, yes, but there is a growing minority who believe that mauve is actually slightly hotter.

Really? It's totally a phrase.

Huh. Google says you are correct, but somehow I have avoided hearing it until today.

We must quell the resistance.

Yes, when metal heats, first it becomes red, then white. Totally a normal phrase.

Incandescent light bulbs work by heating up a tungsten filament until it glows white hot, thereby emitting white light.

Peter Alonso light bulbs are more energy-efficient, but they're too big to be practical for most applications in the home or office.

Ichiro could be white hot if he wanted to. Which he probably should, if he wants to keep playing major league baseball.

Also there are prospects and there are prospects. You could be the former as a 23 year old first baseman in AA - there are late-bloomers out there - but I'm inclined to think that you're the latter.

Maybe they have been playing it slow with him due to injuries? He didn't appear in many games in either of his professional seasons so far.
   28. Adam Starblind Posted: May 01, 2018 at 08:37 PM (#5664020)
He's in AA this year because he was in A last year. I assume he'll play in AAA later this year, which I understand is the highest level in the minor leagues.

Nice to know Binghamton has at least one University of Florida product who can hit the ball occasionally.
   30. J in the Slope Posted: May 01, 2018 at 11:38 PM (#5664174)
For those who don't follow the Mets minor league system, Alonso is absolutely a real prospect. He's half a year younger than Dom and has hit well in his minor league career. He's made a swing adjustment last year and it has paid dividends.

The knock on Alonso is his defense. Last year it was unplayable. Hopefully this year he'll get it together to play at least below average defense.

And he hit another HR to win a game today.
