Miami Herald: Miami looks into reopening Florida Marlins stadium parking deal

Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado asked the city attorney Thursday whether the city can reopen its contract to build a $100 million parking garage for the Florida Marlins’ new stadium in Little Havana.

The mayor’s pitch: To secure a more favorable return for Miami amid reports that the baseball franchise profited handsomely while securing hundreds of millions of dollars in backing from city and county governments.

...

The mayor’s question comes a day after Miami-Dade Commissioner Rebeca Sosa asked whether county administrators could reopen the Marlins deal and get the team to contribute more to the stadium. Sosa voted in favor of the stadium deal.

Team President David Samson, who spoke with Sosa, said, “I think she understands a contract is a contract.”

If the city of Miami didn't look at the books of the Marlins before entering into the deal to build the stadium, then they are as dumb as Loria is sneaky.

I'm sure there are all kinds of ways that the City could fulfill the letter of the agreement but not the spirit. Making access to the garage entirely unworkable through traffic manipulation and urban planning would be a good start. Particularly if they then built a city-owned garage the next street over.

Actually, this is kind of fun! Mysterious sewer blockages that just happen to involve turning off the team's water during games. Surprise visits from the health inspector on every home date. Painting "Marlins Suck" on the wall of the new garage in 40-foot letters. Zoning changes that surround the stadium with paper mills.

Lots of possibilities.

I think the word you're looking for is corrupt. They are only making an issue of it now because the Marlins' profitability is now public knowledge and they have to pretend to be outraged for as many news cycles as this story lasts, which will be a tiny fraction of the amount of time the city tax payers will be paying for the stadium. I can only imagine the kind of graft a federal investigation of the Miami ballpark would uncover. If it were a movie, I would buy a ticket for it and a big ####### tub of popcorn and one of those sodas the size of a mini keg that the theater very generously offers to refill for free even though I will either a) not be able to finish it in the 2 hours the movie lasts or b) collapse of diabetic shock if I manage it.

I'm sure Michael Westen, Fiona Glenanne, and Sam Axe could think of some clever things to do.

They call that a "medium."

I'm sure Michael Westen, Fiona Glenanne, and Sam Axe could think of some clever things to do.

<Michael Westen narrates>

"Uncovering sports team malfeasance and local government corruption is usually a huge job. You need law enforcement officers from a different jurisdiction, sufficient probable cause to get warrants, and a lot of time.

"Triggering a public relations backlash, on the other hand, is much simpler. Get your hands on a few simple documents, leak them to the Internet, and you've got an uproar that will kick an investigation into overdrive without having to get involved yourself."

Nicely done Derrek.

Thanks. Would've had it up sooner but I spent some time trying to work out a way to include a cheap cell phone and chewing gum.

I love that show.
